Golf tip of the week: Great swings possess common denominators

PHOTO PROVIDED Perfect the common denominators during the winter months and you will play better in the spring.

You may have noticed all good golfers do not look the same when they swing. However, they all have common denominators. If you apply the same common denominators, you will also improve your ball striking, regardless of how you swing.

The common denominators are:

• Good posture at address, a relaxed grip, chin up and a one-piece takeaway.

• Take the club back with the shoulders turning around the spine.

• The most important common denominator is maintaining good balance.

• All good golfers have a set preshot routine, and they do not deviate from it.

• Finish facing the target with the shoulders, hips and knees parallel to each other.

Some modern professionals have introduced the world to swinging as hard as they can, but the key is to swing as fast as your balance will allow.

Imagine you are standing on ice and do not want to slip. This will increase balance. Compare your swing to a roller coaster picking up speed: don't start the down-swing by jerking the club. Allow it to build up speed gradually. This will allow you to gain more clubhead speed while maintaining balance.

Don't forget to enjoy this great game called golf.
