TOP TRACK RETURNERS:

Sprinter

Zach Stopper, Loyalsock

He was overshadowed a year ago by teammate Sam Newton who was as consistent as any 100-meter sprinter in the district. But Stopper was one of just two local underclassmen to place at the district meet in the 100 last year. He got his senior season started on the right foot in the Lancers' first meet by winning both the 100 and 200. He was a consistent sub-11.5 runner last season and should be able to make a push to the 11.2 range this season. There were only two seniors in last year's district 100-meter final, meaning the field is going to be crowded looking to replace Newton as the district champion.

Hurdles

Tre Taylor, Williamsport

In a season where the area field in the hurdles was deeper than the Mariana Trench on both the boys and girls side, Taylor separated himself as just a freshman as maybe the cream of the crop. He went on to finish eighth in the state in the 110 hurdles as the only freshman in Class AAA to reach the state semifinals. A smooth-as-silk runner, he glides over hurdles and could challenge the Williamsport record of 14.3 in the high hurdles this year. Hard to imagine he'll be challenged much this year after winning a district title in the high hurdles by nearly a half-second, and in the 300 hurdles by more than a second.

Mid-distance

Addison Magyar, Warrior Run

He was a key part of the 3,200 relay team which finished sixth in the state, and a 1,600 relay team which was less than a second from qualifying for the state meet. His work in the relays likely hurt him at the district meet in the open 800, but Magyar still posted a season-best time under 2 minutes in the 800. He returns to the 3,200 relay team with teammate Tyrese Hazzoum to form a combination which will already put the Defenders in contention in the two distance relays.

Distance

Alejandro Quintana, Loyalsock

Much like his teammate Stopper, Quintana was overshadowed last year by teammates Quinn Serfass and Ryan Sullivan, who both qualified for the state meet in the 3,200. Those two finished in the top two spots in the district and Quintana quietly finished fifth in the same race. Quintana stepped out of their shadow this past fall when he stepped forward and won the District 4 Class AA cross country championship and went on to finish 14th at the state meet. He's only a junior, but has already asserted himself as the next in the line of success stories from the Loyalsock distance program.

Jumps

Dominick Caputo, Montoursville

In his first trip to the state meet in Shippensburg, Caputo walked away with a medal after finishing in sixth place on the meet's first day. He was one of seven jumpers to clear 6 feet, 2 inches, but his clean run to that point helped him best the six others. He had a season's-best jump of 6-3 and was one of just three jumpers to clear at least 6 feet at the district meet. He was the only underclassmen of the top four finishers at districts and returns to competition this season as the favorite to earn district gold. He was also one of only three underclassmen to finish in the top eight at the state meet.

Throws

Josh Gose, Lewisburg

As a sophomore, Gose picked a great time to have his best throw of the season in the shot put. His mark of 51-0 3/4 was good enough to earn him a fifth-place finish at the state meet in Shippensburg. The most consistent shot put or discus thrower in the area last year, Gose fittingly capped his season on the podium in Shippensburg, and he'll enter the season as the district favorite after state champion Darien Yeager of Danville graduated. Southern Columbia's Troy Donlan was the only other thrower in Class AA in the district to yield a 50-foot throw last season, and he and Gose should put together some stellar duels this season.

Pole Vault

Levi Kennel,

Warrior Run

In a field which was full of both parity and seniors, Kennel was one of few underclassmen remaining after the 2018 season. Warrior Run has consistently been part of the race in both boys and girls pole vault in recent years, including Rylie Mong's third-place finish at states a year ago. Kennel matched his season's-best jump of 11-6 at the district meet to finish in a tie for ninth place, and he was one of just five vaulters to finish in the top 12 as an underclassman.
