Route 15 shut down by another vehicle fire

PHILIP A. HOLMES/Sun-Gazette

Multiple volunteer firefighters responded for the second time in eight days to a major vehicle fire on Route 15, about two miles north of Hepburnville, that forced the closure of the southbound lanes about 1:10 p.m. Wednesday.

This time it was a large camper pulling a pickup truck. The fire engulfed both vehicles. There were no injuries. A married couple of 52 years from Galeton, Potter County, was on their way to Carlisle in their 11-year-old camper when the motor to the camper stopped working, Old Lycoming Township police said. Smoke was soon coming from the engine, which is located at the rear of the camper, officials said.

The couple safely escaped the camper after getting it to the side of the road, police said.

The flames spread to the pickup truck and then to some brush along the western bank of the highway.

Firefighters from Hepburn Township, Trout Run, Old Lycoming Township and Montoursville responded to the fire in Lycoming Township.

Motorists should use caution and expect delays.

The same area of Route 15 South was closed for a short period when bales of hay caught fire on a tractor-trailer truck on May 3.

Starting at $2.99/week.
