JERSEY SHORE – A Good Samaritan who stopped to help put out a school bus fire on the Main Street off-ramp of Route 220 South about 7:45 a.m. Monday was injured when one of rear bus tires blew up in his face, according to Lycoming Regional Patrolman Tyler Bierly.
There were several students on the Jersey Shore Area School District bus, but all safely got off and were not injured.
The bus is owned by Susquehanna Transit that has a contract with the school district to transport students.
The bus driver had stopped and pulled over after another motorist motioned that there was a problem, Bierly said.
Seeing the back of the bus on fire, a man who had a portable extinguisher with him stopped and was trying to put out the fire when a rear tire suddenly exploded. He was taken by ambulance to Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital. There was no information on his identity or medical condition.
Jersey Shore firefighters responded and put out the fire.
A second school district bus was brought to the scene and was used to transport the students to either the middle school or high school, Bierly said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, but it was believed that rear brakes may have sparked it, officials said.
