Lewisburg’s Kaiden Wagner knocked off a pair of state-ranked wrestlers to claim the 132-pound championship at the District 4 South Sectional on Saturday. Wagner was one of four Green Dragons who placed in the Top 3 at the South Sectional to advanced to next week’s District 4 tournament at Williamsport.
Milton put five wrestlers into next week’s district tournament and finished third in the team standings with 113.5 points behind only Southern Columbia (198) and Line Mountain (135.5), who are both state-ranked dual-meet teams.
Wagner entered the tournament ranked 25th in the state at 132 pounds and was the second seed in the tournament. But after posting a first-period fall in the quarterfinals, Wagner defeated 11th-ranked Conner Heckman of Midd-West, 2-0, in the semifinals. He followed that with a 4-2 win over top-seeded and 23rd-ranked Mason Leshock of Line Mountain to claim his second consecutive sectional title. Wagner lost to Leshock by fall earlier this season.
He was joined atop the podium by fellow Green Dragon Jace Gessner, who won his first section title. Gessner won the 106-pound title by scoring a fall over Southern Columbia’s Gaege Fronk in 3:19 in the semifinals. He then upset 22nd-ranked Nolan Baumert of Line Mountain, 4-2, in the final.
Lewisburg will also send Logan Bartlett (second at 138 pounds) and Brady Cromley (third at 160) to the district tournament.
Although Milton didn’t crown a champion, the Black Panthers did have three runners-up. State-ranked Kyler Crawford took second place at 145 pounds, falling 5-1 in the final to eighth-ranked Patrick Edmondson of Southern Columbia. Crawford reached the final by defeating Line Mountain’s Ian Coller, 4-2, in the semifinals. Coller recently defeated Crawford, 15-9.
Nathan Rauch also finished second, dropping a 5-3 decision to 11th-ranked Damon Backes of Mount Carmel in the 215-pound final. And Nolan Loss took second at 285 pounds, losing by fall to Mifflinburg’s seventh-ranked Emmanuel Ulrich in the 285-pound final.
Milton’s T.J. Walter (third ard 138 pounds) and Aven Ayala (third at 189 pounds) also qualified for the District 4 tournament.
— Canton won its second consecutive District 4 North Section championship, crowning three champions and qualifying eight wrestlers for the District 4 tournament. The Warrriors, who hadn’t competed since Jan. 25 because of positive COVID-19 tests in the program, topped Jersey Shore for the team title, 174-150.
Isaac Landis (120), Hayden Ward (138) and Riley Parker each took home championships for Canton. Landis was the lowest-seeded wrestler district-wide to win a section title Saturday, winning as the tournament’s fourth seed with a pair of falls.
Ward used a 13-3 major decision in the final to beat Athens’ Kaden Setzer, and Parker earned an 11-3 major decision over Shore’s Tyler Bauder in the 160 final.
The Warriors will be joined at the district tournament by Bailey Ferguson (second at 132), Michael Davis (second at 152), Cohen Landis (third at 106), Hudson Ward (third at 145) and Derek Atherton-Ely (third at 189).
Jersey Shore tied Canton for the most champions in the North Section, crowning three champs. Freshman Brock Weiss won the 106-pound title, Liam Goodrich was first at 132, and Hayden Packer took the title at 189. Also qualifying for districts was Gabe Andrus (second at 145), Bauder (second at 160), Lee Springman (second at 285), and Dyllian Ross (third at 215).
A week after becoming the winningest wrestler in Sullivan County history, Nate Higley won his third North Section title, using two falls and a forfeit to capture the 145-pound title. He’ll be joined at districts by Rocky Finnegan, who was third at 113 pounds.
Williamson had a trio of district qualifiers, including heayweight Kade Sottolano, who captured the 285-pound championship. Mikey Sipps took second at 215 pounds, and Carter Gontarz finished third at 120 pounds.
North Penn-Liberty had a pair of district qualifiers as sophomore Kohen Lehman used a fall and a pair of decisions to win the 172-pound championship. Patriot June took third at 132 pounds.
