Local roundup: South boys tennis tops Shikellamy

In boys tennis, South Williamsport defeated Shikellamy, 4-1. At No. 1 singles, Logan Odgen played a great match against CJ Doebler as the Mountie walked away with a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8 victory. South’s Ross Flerlage won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0, against Shikellamy’s Micah Stahl.

The Mounties’ two doubles victories were both via forfeits.

Williamsport defeated Jersey Shore, 5-0. Kyle Shuler earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles and Alex Norris won at No. 2 singles for the Millionaires, 6-0, 6-0 over Eli Bower.

At No. 1 doubles, Williamsport’s Evan Beiter and Owen Kaar defeated Ross Fuller and Conner Cornelius, 6-1, 6-1.

Wellsboro blanked North Penn-Liberty, 5-0. Will Poirier defeated River Hicks-Lee, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. Zach Singer defeated Allen Weed, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Galeton blanked North Penn-Liberty, 5-0, Tuesday.

• Williamsport beat Jersey Shore in track and field in both girls (97.5-51.5) and boys (111-39) competition.

On the girls side, Tionna Collier won in the 100 and 200 for the Millionaires. Jersey Shore’s Aubrey Sechrist picked up a win in the 800 and 1,600. Jessica Robinson won for the Millionaires in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 2 inches.

On the boys side, Williamsport’s J. Henry Lyon won the 1,600 with a time of 4:28.02. Ezra Miller was a two-time winner for the Bulldogs as he won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Williamsport’s Garrett Laver won in the javelin with a throw of 132-2.

Lewisburg defeated Danville, 77-72, in boys track and field. Thomas Hess won in two events as he picked up a win in the 800 in 2:05.35 and the 3,200 in 9:40.64. Anthony Bhangdia won the triple jump with a distance of 44 feet, 1 inch. James Koconis won the 400 in 52.98 and Alan Daniel won the 1,600 in 4:34.94.

• In high school softball, Faith Persing scattered three hits and struck out 13 through seven innings of work as Montgomery edged South Williamsport, 1-0. Taylor McRae, Courtney Smith and Brynn McRae all had a hit for the REd Raiders. Aleigha Rieppel and Rachel Stahl both went 1 for 3 for the Mounties. Rieppel scattered four hits in the circle and struck out three.

• In high school baseball, Dallas Griess homered and Cameron Sims hit two doubles, but Williamsport lost 13-3 to Hollidaysburg. Braeden Mazzante went 2 for 4 with a double. The Millionaires also lost 7-3 to 2019 Class AAAA state champion Selinsgrove.

Hughesville scored five fifth-inning runs to trim a seven-run deficit to two but could get no closer as Southern Columbia handed it its first defeat, 8-6. Dylon Pequignot went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Hughesville while Clayton Poust was 1 for 2 with an RBI. Michael Zsido and Braden Heim had two hits each for Southern (3-0).

Lewisburg scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, cruising to a 17-1 rout against Shamokin in six innings. The Green Dragons scored 10 in the top of the sixth and collected 13 hits.

Williamson nearly erased a nine-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning, but came up just shy in an 11-9 loss to Cowanesque Valley in high school baseball. Williamson scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Nolan Kutney went 4 for 4 and AJ Llorente and Grayson Rinker combined on a three-hitter as Montoursville defeated Danville, 10-3. Llorente earned his first win at Montoursville and Rinker a three-inning save. Kutney tripled and had two RBIs and scored four times. Josh Burger also had a big day and went 3 for 4 with a double and four runs. Maddix Dalena drove in three runs and Heath Jones was 2 for 2.

Jersey Shore made a fantastic comeback, battling back from down six runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to defeat Shikellamy, 12-11 in eight innings. The Bulldogs scored twice in the sixth inning, four times in the seventh and walked off with the win in the eighth. Brandon Laubach continued his torrid start and went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs. Karter Peacock also is hitting well and went 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Owen Anderson went 2 for 4 with and RBI and three runs as Jersey Shore improved to 2-0.

• Junior Michael Turck led the Lycoming College golf team in its first outing of 2021, posting a ninth-place finish with a 90 at the team’s opening tri-match against Penn College and Susquehanna.Penn College led the three teams with a 328 while Susquehanna was close behind at 335. The Warriors finished with a 468.

• Justin Porter threw a three-hitter in game one and Brittan Kittle went deep three times in the second game as Penn College swept Lancaster Bible College, 2-0 and 13-8.

In the second contest, Penn College received five total home runs as Kittle had hree and Cameron Dick and Jacob Carles both hit one.

• Junior Owen Zimmerman scored four goals to lead the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team, which fell to Misericordia, 24-6, in a MAC Freedom contest.

Zimmerman notched four goals on seven shots and classmate Blake Premo scored the other two goals. Freshman Lucas Podvey posted an assist, six groundballs and won 15-of-28 faceoffs.

Sophomore Andrew Dede posted three groundballs and caused two turnovers and junior Ian Chapman added four groundballs and one caused turnover.
