Central Mountain ended up on the wrong end of an offensive showcase Friday night.
Mifflinburg, who accumulated over 500 yards of total offense Friday, scored on six of its 10 possessions to defeat Central Mountain, 42-13.
The combination of a strong run game from Mifflinburg and offensive woes from Central Mountain was too much for the Mill Hall Wildcats to overcome.
"Mifflinburg's a good football team, they outplayed us. They outplayed us in all phases of the game, and it happens, that's the game of football," Central Mountain coach Shanon Manning said after his team's second consecutive loss following a 5-1 start. 'They (Mifflinburg) didn't do anything that we hadn't seen or done before."
Central Mountain's offense struggled from the game's start to its end. The Wildcats had eight of their 10 drives result in a punt, turnover, or turnover on downs. Central Mountain's 13 points posted Friday night was one shy of its lowest total of the season when it managed 12 in its opener.
Ryan Pentz was Central Mountain's bright spot offensively. The senior dashed for a team-high 45 yards and was responsible for both touchdowns. Pentz scored on a 5-yard run and hauled in a 44-yard score through the air from fellow senior teammate Brett Gerlach.
Outside of Pentz's two touchdowns and another flashy outing from wideout Connor Foltz who tallied 87 yards on just two catches, the Wildcat offense couldn't find its rhythm.
The opposing team's offense was a different story.
Led by sophomore quarterback Troy Dressler, Mifflinburg's offense put on a show. Central Mountain allowed a season-high 503 total yards of offense. It was the result of breakaway runs, efficient blocking and speed across the field. Mifflinburg racked up four scores of 25 yards or more in the win. Nobody impacted the game more than Carter Breed. The sophomore tailback dashed for 176 yards on just six carries. Breed took three of his carries to the house.
Central Mountain was outscored 14 to zero in the opening quarter and never was able to get back in it. Mifflinburg's offensive weapons proved to be too much as the Wildcats of Mill Hall fell to 5-3.
As for Manning and the Wildcats? The recipe for improvement is simple.
"Get back to basics and keep doing what we're doing. See who's available and go from there," Manning said.
