Bald Eagle Area coach Jesse Nagle had high praise for Jersey Shore senior playmaker Cayden Hess after Friday’s game.
"The dude is a player, there's no question," Nagle said.
Hess, who contributed on both sides of the ball in Shore's, 48-5, win over the Eagles--came away with two interceptions and 74 yards receiving.
According to Shore coach Tom Gravish, who made his return to the place he graduated high school, this time of the year brings out the best in Hess.
"He was big on defense," Gravish said. "Cayden's only going to continue to do it, this is his time of year."
Friday's game between the Bulldogs and Eagles started slow. As many anticipated tons of scoring early from two prolific offenses, the defenses came to play. Both teams punted twice each on their first two possessions. Breck Miller's field goal at the 10:51 mark of the second quarter broke the scoreless tie.
Miller's successful kick marked Shore's first score of the game as it would lead for the entire way. Shore quarterback Brady Jordan, who ran for more than 100 yards and two scores in the win, later ran in an eight-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs ahead 10-0.
Later in the half BEA its first points thanks to a safety setup from a solid punt from Garrett Burns.
Shore took a, 10-2, lead into the half. The game was within reach at the point, but unfortunately it would be the last time.
The Bulldogs then rattled off a 28-point third quarter to open the game up. Shore was efficient on both sides of the ball and was able to pull away from the Eagles.
Jordan scores his second and final touchdown of the night after he scampered for a 67-yard score midway through the third. It wasn't short after Jordan found a streaking Connor Griffin for a 77-yard TD through the air. Griffin hauled in two catches for a total of 85 yards.
Hayden Packer and Elijah Jordan each added rushing scores to close out the scoring spree. At the end of the third quarter, the contest was essentially out of reach.
"We thought we got some bad bounces, but we try to play next-play mentality. Hats off to them (BEA), I have tons of respect for them I hope they win the Double-A championship and district championship. Being a former alum, I root for them every week but one. Jesse and those guys are a class group," Gravish said. It's always exciting to come back here. I was proud of the way our guys responded in the second quarter; it was tough getting yards. We always kind of emphasize that if we play together--one team one heartbeat--we feel that we can win any game."
Shore went on to add another TD thanks to a pick-six in the final quarter and BEA nailed a field to goal to end the game.
“We had opportunities. We dropped a couple of touchdown passes, it's one of those things the door is open" Eagles coach Jesse Nagle said. "You either kick it open and keep it going or you let it shut. Unfortunately, tonight we let it shut. No excuses. You can't beat an 8-0 team without making plays and we didn't make them."
