Local roundup: Muncy, Hughesville girls soccer clinch playoff berths

Addi Eyer scored off a Mia Edkin assist as Muncy continued its strong season and defeated Millville, 1-0, to improve to 9-5 and clinched a District 4 playoff berth. It’s the Indians’ first postseason berth since 2017.

Sarah Dgien played a strong game in goal, making four saves and the defense limited Millville’s chances as Muncy improved to 9-5.

Six players scored as Hughesville beat Towanda, 6-1, and clinched a District 4 playoff berth. The Spartans led 4-0 at halftime. Sophia Clark, Jadyn McGinley, Kayleigh Rooker, Madi Paulhamus, Sarah Pidcoe and Bailey Derrick all scored for the Spartans, which out-shot Towanda, 22-5.

It’s the second playoff appearance for Hughesville since 2019 after previously not qualifying since 2015.

Tierney Patterson recorded 20 saves for North Penn-Mansfield in the Tigers’ 3-0 loss to Williamson and reached 500 for her career in the process. She sits at 505 after Saturday’s contest.

Mikayla Long scored twice and Sophie Kilbride had a goal and assist as Lewisburg blanked East Juniata, 3-0 in the rain. Kilbride scored less than nine minutes into the game before assisting Long late in the first half. Madison Vanbuskirk set up Long’s second-half goal with an assist.

Mackenzie Lopez scored four goals and Janae Bergey had two goals and two assists in Milton’s 7-1 victory against Line Mountain. Leah Walter had two assists and a goal as well.

Brodey Scoggins, Conner Smith, Evan Yoder and Austin Gainer all scored two goals as the Milton boys soccer team routed Line Mountian, 10-1. Carter Lilley and Trent Strous also scored and Milton scored the game’s first six goals in the opening 12 minutes. Scroggins ignited the flurry with a goal off a Dom Ballo assist 56 seconds into the contest.

Hughesville defeated Towanda, 8-2, thanks to Nick Trevouledes’ five-goal, one-assist performance. Eli Edkin had two goals and an assist for the Spartans.

Cowanesque Valley took third at the NTL Cross Country meet and North Penn-Mansfield’s Noah Shedden won the race in a time of 16 minutes, 47.7 seconds. CV’s Kristian Midzail took second in 17:05.7 and teammates Owen Cummings and Nathaniel Welch took fourth and eighth, respectively. Wellsboro’s Havanh Simcox placed ninth in the girls race which was won by Troy.

In girls volleyball, Williamsport defeated East Juniata, 3-0 (25-8, 25-10, 25-11).

Wellsboro fell to Towanda, 3-2 (25-10, 15-25, 13-25, 25-22, 17-15). Maddi Bordas had 27 assists for Wellsboro and Emma Owlett had 30 kills. Bri Smith added seven digs.

Sophomores Kenedy Stroup and Alex Esterling each scored to lead the Mansfield University women’s field hockey team to a 2-0 non-conference road victory over Frostburg State University. The Mounties (8-6 overall) won their third straight game behind their third straight shutout by sophomore keeper August Lewist. Mansfield outshot the Bobcats, 12-8, while winning the battle of penalty corners, 13-5.

Lycoming outshot FDU-Florham by 10 shots, but two first-half FDU-Florham goals helped it to a 2-0 win in women’s soccer.

Junior Bridget Maaluom led the Warriors with five shots on goal, but the Devils were able to walk out with the shutout thanks to a 13-save effort from Erica Blackburn.

PSU Berks blanked Penn College, 2-0, as the Wildcats fell to 5-9. The two goals came from Emily Clapper and Adriana Lepera. PSU Berks out-shot Penn College, 14-3.

Lock Haven defeated Shippensburg, 1-0, in a PSAC contest. Kylie Auman had seven saves in goal. Josie Swartz scored in the 23rd minute.

Mansfield fell to Bloomsburg, 1-0. Sophomore goalie Faith Cameron had a career-high 14 saves for the Mounties. Lauren Bull scored the goal for the Huskies.

In men’s soccer, Lycoming scored the first three goals in a 3-1 win against FDU-Florham. Sophomore Dylan Sloan paced Lycoming with two assists, giving him a team-leading five. Freshman Cam Laubach had his first goal of the season in the ninth minute.

Penn College fell to PSU Berks, 1-0, to drop to 3-9-4. PSU Berks scored the game’s only goal in the 70th minute when Alex Chamorro scored off a goalie deflection.

Lock Haven beat Shippensburg, 2-1. Williamsport graduate Tom Pombor scored in the 53rd minute, when he put in a rebounded shot. Shippensburg would tie it before Samuel Hershey scored to put Lock Haven back ahead.

Lock Haven defeated Shippensburg in four sets, 3-1, and won its first conference game of the season. The Bald Eagles collected the first set 25-17, behind 12 kills. The LHU defense held the Raiders offense to just six kills in the set. Shippensburg rebounded in the second set for the 25-21 win, but Lock Haven shut down the surge with two straight set wins (25-18, 25-23).

Lycoming defeated Hood College, 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23) as freshman Ali Koval, a North Penn-Mansfield graduate, and freshman Kendall Myers combined for 66 digs for the Warriors. Koval reached 412 digs on the season, just outside the top 20 in program history.

Penn College dropped a pair of United East matches in a tri-meet at Morrisville, falling to Wells College (3-1) and Morrisville (3-0). Emalie Marnati led Penn College witih 14 kills against Wells and Cheyenne Stein had a team-best 23 assists.

In college cross country, Katryn Yocum finished 21st in a 139-runner field, running the course in 24 minutes, 48.4 seconds at the Aubrey Shenk Invitational at Gettysburg College. Yocum finished 13th among Division III competitors. Madisyn Neal ran a career-best 32:28.8 for Lycoming.

At the Hood College Open Invitational, Penn College’s men’s team finished 12 as Alec Rees finished 49th. Rees turned in a time of 31:04.10 over an 8K course and was followed by Dean Fulton, who took 70th (32:16.90).

On the women’s side, Penn College didn’t field a team, but Cinnamon Digan took 66th (22:02.50) and Avery Baker, a Central Mountain graduate, finished in 76th in 24:46.10.

Senior Jake Booth and sophomore Carter Branigan each won two events and were a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay for the Lycoming College men’s swim team, leading the way as the team won nine events to beat Albright College for the first time since 1995, 111-60.

Booth took home victories in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.19 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:27.45. Branigan won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.16 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.12. The Warriors won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.44, as Booth and Branigan were joined by sophomores C.J. Zortman and Eliot Keith in the win.

The Mansfield University sprint football team had a strong fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as the Mounties fall to Army West Point on a wet and rainy Karl Van Norman Field, 19-11.

The Mansfield defensive unit had big moments forcing three turnovers, including a 40-yard fumble recovery touchdown by Kendall Smith Jr. Smith Jr had an Interception as well.

Senior Chase Moser and junior Matt Roberts each had 16 tackles for the Mounties. Moser added 1.5 sacks on the day.
