Local roundup: South boys defeat Benton

Caleb Jackson scored a goal halfway through the first half off an assist by Hayden Swinehart, and South Williamsport defeated Benton in a Mid-Penn contest, 1-0. The Mounties out-shot Benton, 8-4, as Brock Weaver recorded four saves to secure the shutout victory.

• Mia Edkin scored twice and had two goals, and Emilie Nagel had a goal in Muncy's 7-0 win against North Penn-Mansfield in girls soccer on Monday.

Tierney Patterson had 14 saves for the Tigers as Muncy moved to 10-5.

Raygan Lust scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute in overtime to give Warrior Run a 2-1 win against Midd-West. Amara Bieber scored the opening goal before Midd-West tied it in the second half.

Erblinda Imeri had a hat trick and Alexa Laluz, Emily Giger, Natalie St. James and Madeline Bender all scored twice in Montgomery's 12-1 win against CMVT.

Kayleigh Rooker, Hailey Sherwood and Sophia Clark all scored as Hughesville defeated Athens, 3-1. Hannah Walker cut the deficit to 2-1 early in the second half, but Clark scored on a direct kick with 18:33 left to put the Spartans back up by two.

• Muncy recognized its four seniors – Ariana Copeland, Brandi Hitesman, Hallie McClure and Willow Perakovich — in the field hockey team’s 1-0 win over Benton. Madeleine Boerckel scored the game-winning goal.

The seniors chose to collect and donate funds to a local charity: Aly’s Monkey Movement. The charity, started in Lycoming County by 11-year-old Aly Creasy, provides stuffed monkeys to children all over the world who may be experiencing a difficult time in their lives.

• In girls volleyball, Williamsport picked up two road wins against Juniata and East Juniata. The Millionaires beat Juniata, 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-6) and East Juniata, 3-0 (25-7, 25-10, 25-11).

Elise Berthold had 19 kills for the Millionaires against Juniata and Johanna Baker had 13 assists in the win over East Juniata.

• Junior Jackson Bussell won his second career individual title and the Bucknell men's golf team claimed the team crown -- both by one-stroke margins -- at the Howard Bison Invitational at Woodmont Country Club.

Scoring conditions were difficult throughout the 54-hole tournament, and Bucknell won it with a 922 total after posting a final-round 312.

• After becoming the first Lycoming College volleyball player to post 40 digs in a match since 2010, freshman libero Ali Koval, a North Penn-Mansfield graduate, earned her second MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week award.

Koval averaged 7.40 digs over three matches for the Warriors. She notched 40 digs in a 3-1 win over Hood, tied for fifth-most in the program's record book and the most since Emily Abel had 41 against Concordia (Texas) in 2010. The first-year libero also had 19 digs against Elizabethtown and 15 against DeSales.

Koval, who crossed 400 digs in the match with Hood, has posted 412 digs in 67 sets this year.

• Bucknell junior Abby Gearhart was selected as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week in women's soccer following her two-goal performance against league-leading Boston University on Saturday.

Gearhart scored a goal in each half, with both giving the Bison the lead, although the Terriers used a late tally to salvage a 2-2 draw in a highly entertaining match between two sides that have been stationed at the top of the Patriot League table all season.

• Sophomore forward Alex Esterling was tabbed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week in women's field hockey.

Esterling found the back of the cage three times last week, totaling six points, to lead the Mountaineers to a pair of victories. The slashing forward kicked off the week with both goals in the Mountaineers' 2-0 upset victory over No. 10 Indiana University of Pennsylvania, before adding another score in a non-conference win over Frostburg State University on Saturday.

• Freshman defensive back Kendall Smith Jr. keeps the Mansfield University sprint football team's award streak alive, earning Co-CSFL Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week.

Smith also improves the Mounties weekly-awards total to 10. Freshman Cahsid Raymond has brought home Rookie of the Week four times and Offensive Player of the Week three times, while freshman defensive back Nakiem Scott also earned Defensive Player of the Week after week one.

• With two individual wins and a relay win to lead the Lycoming College men's swimming team to its first win over Albright since 1995, senior Jake Booth has earned his first career Middle Atlantic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week award.
