Local roundup: Williamsport’s Ethan Holmcomb advances to state cross country meet

Williamsport’s Ethan Holcomb qualified for the PIAA cross country championships next weekend in Hershey. The Williamsport boys and girls soccer teams navigated a muddy course to finish third behind only Altoona and State College at the District 6 meet.
Holcomb finished sixth with a time of 17:14.30. State College’s Charles Endres took first in 16:47.00.
Williamsport’s only other top-20 finisher was Patrick Nardi, who took 12th in 17:45.30.
On the girls side, Williamsport’s top finisher was senior Emily Hale, who took 15th in 22:01.20. She was followed by teammates Danyse Washington (16th in 22:36.60) and Ellie Fisher (17th in 22:45.50).
Williamsport’s Anna Harstead was also a top-20 finisher as she placed 19th after finishing 23:11.60.
State College’s Marlee Kwasnica took first in 19:11.00.
Central Mountain’s Abbey Wolfe finished 11th thanks to finishing in a time of 21:02.20.
Muncy’s season came to an end in the District 4 Class A quarterfinals on Saturday with a 5-1 loss to Southern Columbia.
Evelyn Cook scored twice and Loren Gehret had a goal and assist for the Tigers. Southern held a 5-0 lead before Mia Edkin scored off an assist by Emilie Nagel in the 78th minute to avoid the shutout.
“I am extremely proud of how hard the girls have worked this season. They improved, week by week, game by game. We were able to win the most games in a season as well as obtain the first playoff win in school history,” Muncy coach Jason Gresh said. “They gave everything they had each and every game. They helped to move the program forward. As a coach, that's all you can ask.”
Sarah Dgien had 12 saves for Muncy, which ended the season 13-6. It’s the most wins in a single season for a Muncy girls soccer team.
Southern held a 17-3 shots on goal advantage.
Lewisburg fell to undefeated Central Columbia, 3-1, in the District 4 Class AA quarterfinals. Haley Bull and Madison Whitesell each scored in the first half to put the Blue Jays ahead, 2-0, before Caroline Blakeslee cut the deficit to one goal off an assist by Maria Bozella with 19:45 until halftime.
Madelyn Blake, who also had an assist, sealed the game for Central Columbia with a goal in the 73rd minute.
Central Columbia held a narrow 6-5 shots on goal advantage. McKenna Meadows had three saves in goal for the Green Dragons.
Lewisburg’s boys soccer team is once again back in the District 4 Class AA semifinals after the Green Dragons defeated Loyalsock, 6-0, in boys soccer.
Lewisburg scored three goals in each half. Alfred Romano had two goals in the first half and Reese Dieffenderfer, Nick Passaniti, Caleb Kim and Philip Permyashkin all found the back of the net.
Carter Hoover led Lewisburg with two assists and Nick Passaniti added one.
Loyalsock’s offense couldn’t get into a rhythm, firing just two shots — one on goal — as Lewisburg held a 16-1 advantage.
Tony Burns had the shutout in goal for Lewisburg. Ben Grieco recorded 10 saves for the Lancers.
Muncy fell to Southern Columbia, 4-1, in the District 4 Class A quarterfinals. Henry McElroy scored twice for Northumberland Christian. Muncy’s lone goal came from Todd Modispaw with 9:32 to play off an assist by Rowan Revata.
Northumberland Christian held a 28-6 shots on goal advantage. The Indians’ Eli Slamka recorded 10 saves in the loss.
Galeton defeated Sugar Valley, 3-0, in the District 4 Class A girls volleyball semifinals, 25-18, 25-16, 2-12. Olivia Rohrbaugh had 11 digs and nine aces. Lauren Sauley led the team with 17 assists and Johanna Dickerson had 14 assists, nine kills and seven digs. Mikayla Schott added seven digs as well.
Galeton advances to face Canton on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the District 4 Class A championship.
In women’s soccer, sophomore Bailey Dockman scored the first goal of her career, but it wasn’t enough as Mansfield lost to No. 3 Kutztown, 5-1, in a PSAC Eastern contest. She scored the lone goal in the 78th minute off an assist from Taylar Luckenbill.
South Williamsport graduate Bella Green scored her 12th goal of the season, tying Hughesville graduate Jayden Leighow for the team lead, but Lycoming fell in a close contest to Stevens Institute of Technology, 2-1.
The loss kept Lycoming out of the five-team MAC Freedom Championship field.
Green’s goal came in the 21st minute.
Lycoming junior defender Joey Francis scored his first goal of the year, but the Warriors fell to Stevens, 2-1, in men's soccer. His goal put Lycoming on the board in the 19th minute as Lycoming held a 5-2 shots on goal advantage in the first half.
The Ducks scored both goals off penalty kicks.
Lock Haven secured top seed in the PSAC East tournament after defeating East STroudsburg, 3-1. The Bald Eagles fell behind early, but responded quickly as Samuel Hershey scored minutes after East Stroudsburg's goal to tie it in the 10th minute.
Lock Haven’s women’s field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-0 home loss to UMass. The Bald Eagles honored their seniors Joaquina Orlandini, Karina Long and Genni Martinelli.
Orlandi finished with six saves for Lock Haven (5-9, 2-5 Atlantic-10).
Mansfield fell to No. 2 West Chester, 7-0, in a PSAC contest. The Mounties remain in a three-way tie for the sixth and final PSAC postseason spot with Indiana (Pa.) and Slippery Rock.
Mansfield sophomore August Lewis had a game-high 14 saves and Hannah Meyer led Mansfield’s offense with three shots, two on goal.
Lock Haven’s women’s volleyball team lost to Millersville, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-9). Souadou Bangoura led LHU’s offense with eight kills. Defensively, three players had eight or more digs in Kelly Gaston, Ella McBride and Grace Hugar.
With the second-best finish in Lycoming women’s cross country team history, freshman Katryn Yocum earned second-team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors with a 15th-place finish. She had the fourth-fastest time in program history in 24:33.94. It bested her previous best time by seven seconds.
Ali Clemens posted a time of 27:43.47 to take 99th.
On the men’s side, freshman Elliott Bello led Lycoming with an 85th-place finish in a field of 141 runners. He finished in 30:39.61. Senior Maxwell Hanson was right behind him, finishing in 30:50.45.
Lock Haven took first at the Go Fast River Run on the West Branch Cross Country Course. Milton graduate Tanner Walter led LHU with a time of 27:02 and finished eight seconds ahead of Noah Mandel. Warrior Run graduate Hunter Confair placed fourth.
On the women's side, Eliana Klinger was LHU's top finisher with a time of 24:32 to take third. Lauren Mehler took ninth in 25:22.
