Carter Lilley has scored big goals and had big assists all year long for Milton. He scored another one for Milton on Saturday, one that doubled as his 50th career goal to put Milton up, 3-1, two minutes and thirty eight seconds into the second half.
It helped Milton advance to the district semifinals for the first time ever with a 5-1 win over Wellsboro on Saturday in the District 4 class AA boys' soccer tournament.
"I haven't been feeling the best this week. I've been dealing with a shin injury and haven't been able to practice all week," Lilley said. "I thought I would be more of a role player today, but I got a chance and finished it."
Coach Eric Yoder was thrilled for Lilley.
"It was a great and meaningful goal," Yoder said. "He's had big goals and assists for us all year and he's clutch."
Milton faced a Wellsboro team playing a more defensive style than what they prepared for and it took a potent Milton attack time to adjust, but once they did, they scored in bunches.
Joel Yoder started the scoring for Milton midway through the first half as he collected a ball at the top right corner of the box, made a few cuts, and sent an excellent low shot that rattled in the bottom left corner of the net to put Milton up 1-0 with 18:36 in the first half.
Milton kept the pressure on and had a multitude of chances in the next five minutes. Connor Smith finally cashed in on one when he collected a loose ball and fired a rocket of a half volley past the keeper for a 2-0 lead as Milton looked to be in firm control.
Wellsboro would strike back, though. With 2:38 to go in the first half, Hornet Jack Poirier found himself one on one with a charging Milton keeper chasing a through ball. Poirier won the race and deftly touched the ball around the Panther and into the back of the net to make it 2-1.
Milton took the momentum right back after Lilley's aforementioned goal and would control the play for much of the second half. They put the game away for good when Austin Gainer scored from close range with 13:31 remaining off a rebound from the keeper to put Milton up 4-1.
Arguably the highlight of the day for the Panthers was their fifth goal. Lilley had a chance to add to his total after collecting a rebound from the Hornet keeper Aiden Gehman. Gehman was scrambling back into his net, and Lilley could've easily taken a rip from a tight angle in a 4-1 game with a result in little doubt, but he instead squared the ball back to the middle and Brody Scoggins thumped it in for their fifth and final goal with just under nine minutes remaining in the contest. That kind of unselfish play was on display all afternoon for a Milton program in the midst of the best season in program history.
"That's what you love to see as a coach," Yoder said.
