Three Lycoming College men's basketball players finished in double figures, led by 15 points from senior Matt Ilodigwe, but McDaniel College held Lycoming to 34% from the field in a 73-62 win during the Crosstown Challenge on Saturday.
Ilodigwe led the Warriors (2-2 overall) with 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and both sophomore Steven Hamilton and junior DeAundre Manuel each had 13 points. Manuel also posted 13 rebounds. Junior Mo Terry added nine points and junior D'Andre Edmond added five.
The Green Terror (2-0 overall) were led by 37 points and eight rebounds from Michael Wallace and 12 points and six rebounds from Kaelen Kanealey.
Mansfield improved on both ends of the court in their second contest in as many nights to kick of the season, but Virginia Union shot over 50% to steal a 70-61 non-conference victory at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Jazz Farrell was 3 of 6 from 3-point land and 5 of 9 to lead the Mounties (0-2 overall) in scoring in their second game of the season. Freshman Justice Smith added 15 points, four points and four rebounds, while sophomore Marcus Friend scored in double-figures for the second straight game, finishing with 10 points (4 of 4 free throws), while adding a game-high five steals.
The Mounties forced 26 turnovers, while limiting their own to just 16, but Virginia Union (1-1 overall) shot a cool 51% (26 of 51) from the floor and 48% (11 of 23) from 3.
Junior Emily Zoscin led the Lycoming College women's basketball team with 19 points as she was 6 of 13 from the field, but Franklin & Marshall College posted a 73-59 victory at the Mayser Center in the first round of the Terry Green Tip-Off Classic.
Freshman Ashley Yoh claimed 10 points, as she finished 4 of 5 from the field to go with six rebounds. Junior Kenzie Reed tied Yoh to lead the Warriors in rebounds with six. Senior Allison Wagner and sophomore Allison Butler each had two assists.
Penn College fell to King’s, 75-37. King’s was led by Samantha Rajza (25 points) and Emily Morano (22), who combined for 47 points. Loyalsock graduate Cassie Kuhns led the Wildcats with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Ja’Quela Dyer also had six boards. Rachel Teats had six points for the Wildcats.
Mansfield remained within striking distance for all four quarters in their 2021-22 home opener, but D'Youville College proved to be too much as they left Decker Gymnasium with a 50-39 non-conference victory.
Senior Paige Whitfield scored a team-high 11 points with a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Kira Merritt also knocked down two shots from three, finishing with eight points and six rebounds. Junior Jasmine Hilton added eight points and a time for the team-lead in rebounds with sophomore Logan Nutt, with eight each.
The Mounties (0-1 overall) were relentless during their comeback effort, remaining within two scores at the end of each quarter. However, they could not go on the run that was needed to overcome the deficit.
A dominating performance that included three wins by fall helped junior Connor Fulmer win his first collegiate tournament, as he led a group of seven Lycoming College wrestlers that placed at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational.
The Warriors finished fourth in the 17-team field with 121 points, behind Lake Erie (225.5), Washington & Jefferson (134.5) and Washington & Lee (134.5) and ahead of Aderson-Broaddus (102), Thiel (94), Gettysburg (64), Ohio Wesleyan (46.5), Jamestown Community College (46), Case Western (43), Hiram (35), Waynesburg (31), Muskingum (30), Garrett (29.5), Penn State Behrend (25), Pitt-Bradford (19) and UMBC (9).
Fulmer, seeded fifth, opened the tournament with a 48-second pin of Washington & Jefferson's Jacob Walker before decking Jamestown Community College's Alex Christy in 3:53. He faced first-year teammate Robbie West in the semifinals, pinning him in 50 seconds before finishing off the day by beating third-seeded Clay Chadwick of Washington & Lee, 4-2.
Freshman Katryn Yocum became the seventh runner in program history to finish in the top 100 at the NCAA Mideast Regionals to cap a fine rookie year for the Lycoming College cross country team, as she helped the women to a 28th-place finish at Big Spring High School.
Yocum took 90th place in a field of 217 runners, posting a time of 26:05.4. Sophomore Ali Clemens finished in 143rd in 27:54.7 and sophomore Madisyn Neal took 175th in 29:39.3 to round out the team's top three runners. Junior Mariah Rovenolt, a Warrior Run graduate, finished in a career-best 36:06.7 and junior Laurel Stoppard posted a time of 36:53.1.
On the men's side, the team was once again paced by senior Max Hanson, as he finished in a team-best 31:09.2 to take 151st in the field of 222 runners. First-year Eliott Bello took 169th in 32:10.5 and junior Logan Franquet, a Loyalsock graduate, came in 203rd in 35:11.9. Senior Maverick Stenger took 211th in 36:29.4 and senior Diego Pallares took 214th in 37:02.3 to round out the top five. Senior Brandon Gates, a Warrior Run graduate, posted a 37:12.0 and first-year Nate Noel took seventh on the team in 37:30.9.
Junior Katherine Brown set a pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke and senior Jake Booth won three individual events to lead the Lycoming College swimming teams against Messiah University.
Brown's time of 1:06.48 was nearly half a second better than the previous best, set by E. Zimmerman of Elizabethtown in the finals of the 1998 MAC Championships.
Booth won the first individual race of the day for the Warriors in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.45. In the 100-yard freestyle, he led the way with a time of 50.06, and he also took home the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:02.15.
The Lock Haven University volleyball team fell to East Stroudsburg in three sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-14).
The Bald Eagles honored their five seniors before tonight's match: Souadou Bangoura, Madison Goodwin, Jada Dauberman (Central Mountain graduate), Krystal Heffelfinger and Jaiden Yocca.
Gabriela Fialova led the team in kills today, notching seven up front. Ella McBride saw time at libero and played well, collecting ten digs.
