Local roundup: Lycoming women defeat Ohio Northern at Juniata College Tip-Off Tournament

Juniors Diana Rantz and Kenzie Reed led the Lycoming College women's basketball team, as both finished in double figures in a 75-50 setback to Ohio Northern University to wrap up the team's time at the Juniata College Tip-Off Tournament at Memorial Gymnasium.

Rantz had a career-high 11 points adding two rebounds and Reed followed with 10 points, two steals and two rebounds. Reed went 4 for 6 from the floor while Rantz went 3 for 5 in 3-point shots. Sophomore Allison Butler scored eight points to go with two steals, an assist and four rebounds, and first-year Meghan Dufner had seven points and four rebounds. Freshman Ashley Yoh had six rebounds.

The Warriors struck first in the game thanks to a fastbreak layup by Reed, but the Polar Bears out scored the Warriors, 21-8, in the period. Rantz netted a 3-point shot with a minute left in the second quarter to cut the difference to 11 points, but the Polar Bears scored 40 points in the second half while allowing 28 to earn the win.

Alissa Stahler led Ohio Northern with 14 points, two steals and seven rebounds.

Tiarra East scored 16 points to lead host Temple to a 59-46 verdict over Bucknell in non-league action. Taylor O'Brien scored 13 points and Carly Krsul had 12 off the bench for the Bison.

Temple snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 2-2 on the season. The Owls came into the game shooting 16.0 percent (8-50) from 3-point range on the season, but they hit seven of their first 15 in this one to build an early lead.

Bucknell (1-2) was also hot early, starting 3-for-3 from the arc behind two treys from O'Brien and one from Cecelia Collins. O'Brien's triple from the top of the key gave the Bison an 11-9 lead, but Temple scored six straight points, including a three from East, to take the lead for good.

Lock Haven defeated Salem University, 81-80, at the Tri-State Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Seton Hill.

Lock Haven jumped out to a hot start, scoring 24 points in the first ten minutes of regulation. Salem matched LHU's pace in the second quarter, putting back 23 of their own. After the first half, LHU trailed Salem 38-36. The back-and-forth trend continued throughout the second half, before the Bald Eagles ultimately stole the late victory.

In the last four seconds of regulation, Jackie Fetsko and Brooke Lawyer made three combined free throws. Fetsko drew a late foul from Salem's Aleena Mongerie and Adaliz Corbin grabbed the all-important offensive rebound off of the second attempt by Fetsko. Corbin then moved the ball over to Lawyer who drew a foul, and drained her two free throws to take the LHU lead with two seconds on the clock.

Senior Sydney Reed's hot-shooting night led the Mansfield University women's basketball team to a 59-50 decisive victory over Nyack College.

The Mountaineers (1-2 overall) outscored the Warriors 35-2 from behind the arch while adding 12 more points at the line to secure their first victory of the season.

The victory also marks the first win for first-year coach Amy Senefelder.

Down by seven points with 4:12 left, the Lycoming College men's basketball team held Penn College to one point in the waning moments and sophomore Steven Hamilton hit a layup with 17 seconds left to tie the game before Lycoming pulled away for a 67-62 overtime win at Bardo Gym.

Down 58-51 with 4:12 left, the Warriors (3-2 overall) began to work back into the game, as junior DeAundre Manuel hit a pair of free throws. After the Wildcats (0-3 overall) extended the lead back to six with a free throw, junior Mo Terry hit a layup as he was fouled with 1:59 left, and followed that with two free throws to make it 59-57 with 1:31 left.

Lycoming forced a missed shot and a turnover with an offensive foul to set up Hamilton's game-tying layup.

In the extra period, the Wildcats took a 62-61 lead with 1:52 left, but Manuel hit a layup after a steal by Hamilton and then added another layup off an assist from junior Dyson Harward with 17 seconds left to make it 65-62. A pair of free throws iced the game for Lycoming.

Mansfield outscored Nyack in the second half led by 43 points from their bench, but the Warriors used a 12-point first half lead to escape Decker Gymnasium with an 85-74 non-conference victory.

Five different members of the Mountaineers' second unit scored, led by a team-high 18 points from senior Eli Alvin and 12 points from freshman Graham Wooden. Alvin finished 7 of 14 from the floor and 3 of 3 at the line to power the Mountaineer offense. Wooden scored all of his points in the second half, while knocking down two trifectas and running the offense with poise in his freshman debut.

Freshman Jason Thomas knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, freshman Manir Waller pulled in nine rebounds, sophomore Jordan Montgomery hauled in seven boards and dished out four assists. Freshman Idris Ali, a Loyalsock graduate, scored all ten of his points in the second half to also help ignite the comeback, while Scott Woodring had a productive night in the paint, finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Lock Haven used a massive second-half scoring run to power past Chestnut Hill College, 95-67, in non-conference action at Thomas Fieldhouse.

In the first half, Chestnut Hill stuck right with the Bald Eagles behind 44.4% shooting from beyond the arc. LHU was able to build a 41-36 lead going into the halftime break with some key defensive stops.

In college wrestling, Penn College finished eighth at the Wildcat Invitational as Colin Jens (141 pounds) and Jake Kallenborn (184) each earned three wins.

Jens went 3-2 after a 14-5 major decision in his first match, earned a 52-second fall and had a 3-2 decision win. Kallenborn won via technical fall and two decisions.

Penn College’s Cullen Van Rooyan (149), Matt Carpenter (149) and Michael Malloy (157) each earned a win as well.

Lycoming junior heavyweight Connor Fulmer won his second straight tournament title to lead a group of four Lycoming College wrestlers that placed at the Penn College Wildcat Invitational.

Freshman 141-pounder Chase Chapman finished second and both junior 157-pounder Hunter O'Connor, a Jersey Shore graduate, and sophomore 141-pounder Wiley Kahlereach took third.

Lock Haven turned in a solid effort at the team-scored Navy Classic Tournament. Leading the way was champion Luke Werner and Ben Barton.

Werner was perfect on the day and capped his title run with an upset-win in the finals. Barton finished fourth at 157 pounds in what proved to a sensational debut for the Bald Eagle.

Saturday’s tournament field included wrestlers from American, Bloomsburg, Bucknell, The Citadel, Edinboro, Kent State, Michigan State, Ohio, Rutgers, VMI and host-Navy.

The Bald Eagles finished ninth of 12 teams.

The Lock Haven University swimming team faced off against East Stroudsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference dual-meet.

Madison Griffin took a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.35. Griffin also took second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:22.77 in a close finish, only .53 seconds behind the leader.

Sol Asparria finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:07.07. She also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.79.

Kacey Berardinelli secured second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:46.01.
