Freshman Justice Smith led five players in double figures with a team-high 19 points to lead the Mansfield University men's basketball team to a convincing, 79-61, victory over non-conference opponent Mercy College.
The Mounties improve to 1-5 with their first win of the season, while Mercy falls to 0-6.
Smith was 7 of 14 from the floor, while pulling in seven rebounds and dishing out four assists to power the Mountaineers in their best all-around game of the season. Smith connected on an ally-oop dunk in the second half off a pass from freshman Idris Ali, a Loyalsock graduate, who also finished in double figures with 12 points.
Senior Eli Alvin continued to impress in his final season, adding 10 points and five rebounds, while freshman Scott Woodring also added 12 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Jaz Farrell rounded out the Mountaineer double-digit scorers, finishing with 13 points.
In the first half, the Mounties' high-pressure defense forced multiple turnovers to help build an early 10-0 lead through the opening four minutes.
The Mavericks scored seven straight to cut the deficit to three with under four minutes to go, but a put-back dunk by Farrell halted the run.
Ramiir Dixon-Conover scored 23 points to lead hot-shooting Saint Francis to a 93-67 victory over Bucknell at DeGol Arena. Andrew Funk paced the Bison with 17 points, while centers Alex Timmerman (12) and Andre Screen (10) combined for 22.
Ronell Giles Jr. added 13 points for the Red Flash (3-3), who won their second straight after beating Lehigh on Sunday.
Bucknell (2-6) was coming off its best defensive performance of the season in Sunday's 65-56 overtime win over Siena at Sojka Pavilion, but the Bison struggled to get stops in this one. Led by Dixon-Conover, Saint Francis was effective attacking the rim in the first half, and then the Red Flash went 9 for 17 from 3-point range to pull away in the second.
The Bison got out to a great start, hitting 10 of their first 15 shots on the way to a 23-16 lead. Screen, seeing his first action after a three-game injury absence, put back his own miss and then fed Josh Adoh for a corner three. Rice finished in the lane for a 7-0 run and a seven-point lead.
Freshman phenom Cahsid Raymond was named Collegiate Sprint Football League's Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year to highlight a group of 10 Mansfield University athletes who earned All-CSFL honors.
The Mountaineers, headlined by an unprecedented six freshman players, were just one all-conference honoree shy of setting a program-record for the second straight year.
"I am so proud of this very talented group of student-athletes," all-time sprint football coaching wins leader John Evans said. "This group is young and hungry and will return to help us fight for the CSFL Title next season."
Raymond was the lone Mountaineer to earn All-CSFL first team on offense, while senior Chase Moser (defensive line) and Kayin Berger (defensive back) and junior Matt Robert (linebacker) were named to the defensive first team.
Senior Holden Meyers and freshmen Ethan Wilson and LaTrenton Randle landed on the All-CSFL second team offense, while a trio of rookies in Gage Aumick, Kendall Smith Jr. and Nick Ziegler earned honorable mention honors on defense.
Millersville University middle hitter Caitlyn Callahan, a Wellsboro graduate, was named All-Atlantic Region second team by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association following her exceptional freshman season in women’s volleyball.
Last month Callahan was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Rookie of the Year, while also being named to the All-PSAC Eastern Division first team.
Callahan led the PSAC in solo blocks with 52, while finishing second in total blocks (129) and points with 428.5. She also recorded 314 kills, 79 digs and 24 aces over 117 sets of action.
Callahan is the 13th Marauder to earn All-Region honors.
