Penn College cruised past Gallaudet, 75-50, in men's basketball for the Wildcats' first win of the season to move to 1-5 and 1-0 in the United East on Friday night.
Penn College held a 45-22 lead at the half. Three Wildcats were in double figures, including Will Sulesky who had a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double. Also in double figures were Max Jackowsky (10 points) and Corey Blackwell (10).
Sophomore guard Eli Washington converted three-key free throws down the stretch as Lock Haven stormed back to earn an 83-80 victory over the visiting Edinboro Fighting Scots on Friday night in Thomas Fieldhouse.
With the win, Lock Haven (4-0, 1-0 PSAC) ties its best start since 1993-94 and remains unbeaten on the season.
Following a fast-paced start, the two teams settled in over the remainder of the first frame. Lock Haven made a pair of late surges in the half, but it was Edinboro who a held 38-34 advantage at the half.
Out of the halftime break, Edinboro extended the lead back to double figures, before a Lock Haven run cut the gap to four with 5:54 remaining in the half. Lock Haven knotted the game up at 60-60 with 3:47 to play in regulation to setup an exciting finish.
• In women's basketball, Penn College earned its first win of the season by defeating Gallaudet at home, 68-61. The Wildcats (1-5) held a 21-18 lead after the first quarter before Gallaudet took a 34-30 lead into halftime. But Penn College's 22-point fourth quarter helped seal the win.
Rachel Teats was key for Penn College, scoring a team-high 20 points and adding seven rebounds and four assists. Jersey Shore graduate Aubrey Stetts had 14 points and Ja'Quela Dyer had a near double-double of nine points and nine rebounds.
Kayleihg Miller had 10 points.
Lock Haven fell to Edinboro, 59-48. Forward Ahnera Parker had 15 points and a game-high seven rebounds, but the Bald Eagles couldn't overcome a stellar second-half shooting effort from Edinboro.
The loss was the first of the season for the Bald Eagles after its best start (3-0) in 25 years.
Bucknell defeated Vermont, 68-53, on the road. Taylor O'Brien came up huge for the Bison by scoring 24 points and Cecelia Collins chipped in 15. The Bison also received 10 points off the bench from Carly Krsul. Delaney Richason led Vermont wtih an 18-point performance and Anna Olson had a near double-double for Vermont (10 points, nine rebounds).
• At the Wooster Invitational in college swimming in Ohio, Lock Haven’s Lauren Mummert managed a successful performance in the 400-yard individual medley. Mummert placed third overall after the finals with a time of 4:53.64. That time marks a PSAC qualifying mark.
Kacey Berardinelli placed ninth overall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.82. Lily Arledge finished 15th in the same event with a time of 1:16.36.
Madison Griffin snagged a tenth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke during preliminaries with a time of 1:04.16 and finished 11th in the finals with a time of 1:03.59.
The team of Mummert, Berardinelli, Griffin, and Espefani Soto combined to achieve a tenth-place finish in the 200 medley relay finals with a time of 1:58.91.
Mansfield senior Sydney Reed finished with 19 points and Mansfield entered halftime with the lead, but Slippery Rock University surged in the fourth quarter to leave Decker Gymnasium with a 56-65 win.
The Mounties (1-4 overall) started the game strong with early capitalization on turnovers and 4 of 6 shooting from three-point land to end the first quarter. Entering the second quarter with a five-point advantage, the Mounties built on their lead with a 12-4 run to go up by as much as 10.
Still up four points coming out of the half, the Mounties would concede 60 percent overall shooting from The Rock to lose the lead mid-way through the third period. Going into the fourth quarter, the Mounties stayed within striking distance but could not overcome The Rock's dominance in the paint.
