Husband and wife reach 50 years
Margaret and Donald Knaus renewed their wedding vows on Aug. 22, at the altar of Trinity Lutheran Church where they first said their “I Dos” 50 years to the day of their wedding.
Margaret was a graduate of North Penn High School and St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing. She was an X-ray technologist at the former Blossburg State Hospital and Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Wellsboro. She took time from employment to be a full-time mother for five years. Maggie then changed her calling and worked as Tioga County deputy prothonotary, and was an executive assistant at the Cox and Cox Law firm. She began a banking career which spanned 20 years. After work hours, she worked a stint as cheerleading coach at Wellsboro High School. Maggie was also the office manager at Sarah Lindemuth Elementary School. Always active in church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, was a founding board member of Trinity Lutheran School and sat on the board of directors at Trinity.
Don was a Wellsboro High School graduate who earned a B.S. at Mansfield State College as well as graduate degrees at Elmira College and Bucknell. He was a teacher and coach at North Penn High School where he initiated the school’s track and field program. His coaching record was recognized when he was elected to the Tioga County Sports Hall of Fame. While a teacher, he also advised the Student Council and directed numerous plays. He began an administrative career at Loyalsock Township High School. He served several schools as assistant principal and was high school principal at Linesville in the Conneaut School District and at Annville-Cleona. An award winning writer for his newspaper and magazine features, he is the author of several books. He was elected president of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writer Association, the Tiadaghton Chapter SAR and he sat on several local non-profit boards. Don, like Maggie, is active at Trinity Lutheran Church serving a number of terms as congregation president. For many years he served as an elder and deacon. He was also a soloist with the church choir and the Wellsboro Men’s Chorus.
Don and Maggie are proud parents of daughters, Gretchen and Karin, as well as granddaughters, Regan and Reese.
