Mr. and Mrs. James E. Fairchild of Wayne and Morris are celebrating their golden anniversary on Sept. 2, 2022. Married by Rev. R. Bruce Smay in 1972 at the newly built First United Methodist Church in Muncy, a church designed by the groom's father, Elmer E. Fairchild Jr., there were no pews or an altar due to the impact of Hurricane Agnes. Thanks to the late Wally Wentz, a Montoursville florist, the church was adorned with flowers.
James began his teaching career at Valley Forge Military Academy in 1971 where he taught reading and coached both basketball and soccer. In 1978, upon receiving his master's degree in reading from West Chester University he embarked on a 35 career as a reading specialist with the Delaware County Intermediate Unit's non-public sector. He retired in 2012. James coached his two sons in Radnor Wayne Little League for many years and as a five-year president of the Radnor Gridiron Booster Club, he encouraged the instillation of lights on Radnor's Prevost Field.
Sally began her teaching career in 1969 at the George C. Lyter School in Montoursville and retired from Radnor Township School District in 2007 after 30 years. In 2008, after extensive graduate work in both reading and math and a degree in special education, Sally was recruited by Early Intervention as a diagnostic special educator with special needs 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds. She serviced several Delaware County Head Starts, preschools and other Delaware County Early Intervention sites. She retired in 2019 after five decades. The couple, both long-time educators, taught a combined 90 years.
They are the parents of two sons, A.J. (Abram James) of Wayne, a teacher of autistic children; and Zachary, a member of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department and SWAT team member.
