Hughesville couple observes 50 years

Tom and Karen Secules were married on June 16, 1973, by Rev. David Harris at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Hughesville, and are currently members of that same church.
The former Karen Jean Lindauer is the daughter of the late Samuel Lindauer and the late Carol Kaufman Lindauer Schneider and a step daughter of the late Kenneth Schneider.
She graduated from Hughesville High School in 1970 and East Stroudsburg State College in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Her master’s in education degree is from Bloomsburg University (1990), and she attended Penn College and Penn State University for post-graduate work.
Karen retired in 2008 from teaching in the elementary schools for East Lycoming School District for 26 years, with a total of 27 years counting her time teaching for other school districts and Chester Co. Intermediate Unit. Since then, she has worked for the former Northwestern Human Services, Ameriprise Financial, Macy’s Department Store and as a substitute teacher. She most recently retired after eight years as a part-time library assistant at the Hughesville Area Public Library.
Thomas Edward Secules is the son of the late Lewis Secules and Maxine Secules. He graduated from Hughesville High School in 1968 and Lafayette College in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He did some graduate work at Villanova University and is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and Texas.

He was hired into the Bethlehem Steel Loop Program in the Fabricated Steel Construction Division, worked for three-and-a-half years in that division in Bethlehem and Pottstown, and Sparrows Point, Maryland. Upon the closing of the division, Tom transferred in 1976 to Bethlehem’s Wire Rope division in Williamsport. After the company’s many changes in ownership and name, he retired from Williamsport Wire Rope in 2016 after over 40 years in the wire rope engineering department. From 2016 to the present, Tom has been a wire rope consultant through his website, “Secules Consulting LLC.”
They are the proud parents of one daughter, Amy Beth Secules (Ben Roberts), of Hughesville, and their son, the late Christopher Thomas Secules (Jennifer Malinovsky), of Hughesville.
They have four grandchildren: Gwenneth and Ashton Kishbaugh, and Ehlana and Garin Secules.
Tom and Karen celebrated their golden anniversary with a two-week trip to Hawaii in March 2023 and had a family dinner on Friday.
Even though they knew each other in high school, they never dated until college. They’ve had many years of happiness, as well as challenges and sadness. Through those years, they’ve found that the most important things to cherish are the blessings of family and making each moment count.
