Got free time this weekend? Grab a bag! The James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., now has Experience Bags for checkout. Designed for the frantically busy, these kits group together several items around a central theme and allow our families to experience, taste and enjoy activities at home.
There are eight available bags and each will contain several items such as a DVD, a cookbook, a music CD and a book all on the same theme that you can share with your family or just by yourself.
Themes include
Family fun – Settle in for a family fun night with “Meet the Robinsons” DVD, a “Kids in the Kitchen” cookbook and “Family Fun” magazine, along with a music CD and “Back to the Family” cookbook.
Armchair adventure – Take a trip without leaving your house with the DVD “Eat, Pray, Love” and this yoga-filled kit. Filled with yoga music, healthy recipes and a workout DVD, this adventure is sure to be calming and relaxing.
Mysterious Africa – Celebrate Africa while listening to music and creating special treats from “The African Kitchen” and watching the “No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.”
French feast – Break out your inner Julia Child with one of her cookbooks, biographical DVD and the movie, “Julie & Julia.” Also featured is a “Cooking Light” magazine.
All American – Be an American hero with season one of “Homeland.” Also featured are a “Grilling for Life” cookbook and “Taste of Home” magazine with music to make you think it is the Fourth of July.
Taste of Italy – What’s more Italian than pasta and opera? Listen to “Carmen” while cooking one of Giada DeLaurentiis’s recipes in “Everyday Pasta.” Read about the “History of Opera” and then watch the Oscar-winning movie “Moonstruck” for a romantic date night.
Outdoor sports – Experience the beauty of the Pennsylvania Wilds with this pack that features DVDs about fly fishing and deer hunting. Also included is a “Fish and Game” cookbook, as well as two hunting magazines.
Edwardian England – Go behind the scenes of “Downton Abbey’s” first season with the book, “Life Below the Stairs.” This pack includes music from the popular BBC television show, along with a book about Victorian and Edwardian decor.
Bags check out for two weeks and may be placed on hold through the library’s catalog at www.jvbrown.edu. Overdue fines are $1 per day.
“Borrowing this idea from the Portage (MI) Public Library, weekend experience bags bring programming right into the home of our patrons,” states Melissa Rowse, assistant director. “Many people are too busy to attend our arm chair travel series or other adult programs. However, we still want to give them the opportunity to participate in the experience.”
