On National Poppy Day, May 24, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 617 will distributing poppies as a tribute to our fallen heroes between 5 and 9 p.m.
The board of directors of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 617, 901 S. Market St., South Williamsport, "hold a special place in our hearts for the parents, siblings, spouses and friends of those who served in our Great Nation," according to the news release. "We cannot help but think of all of the men and women who have gone to fight for this Great Nation and did not return home."
"While we are all guilty of celebrating the unofficial start of summer and we encourage others to have a great weekend, it is also important to remember the reason for the holiday," the news release continues. "Memorial Day is the day that Americans set aside to honor those brave men and women who lost their lives while defending our freedoms. It is our duty to honor these individuals' sacrifices, to pray for their families and to take a moment in silence to recognize their service."
The American Legion Auxiliary was founded in 1919 as a community of volunteers serving veterans, military and their families. Auxiliary Members assist veterans in hospitals, advocate for veteran issues, support veterans in need, distribute poppies for remembrance and so very much more.
"We must never forget," the news release said. The poppy, which bloomed on the battlefields of France after World War I, has grown to become an internationally known and recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. One Hundred (100%) Percent of donations received will go directly to help veterans and their families."
