Weekend festival underway in Sugar Valley region

LOGANTON -- Loganton will be in all of its small-town American glory over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, as Sugar Valley celebrates country and community while, at the same time, honoring our fallen service men and women who died while serving in America's armed forces.
Boosters Festival
The Sugar Valley Rural Charter School Athletic Boosters invite the public to their sixth annual Memorial Weekend Festival Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25. Tonight the festival will be open from 6-10 p.m., and on Saturday from 5-9 p.m. The festival is held on the Sugar Valley Fire Company grounds at 24 W. Anthony St. in Loganton, behind the banquet hall.
Food and entertainment
Entertainment on Friday night will start at 6 p.m. with a concert by the Sugar Valley Rural Charter School Band, followed by the eclectic sounds of Broc Phillips and Friends from 8-10 p.m.
Saturday's musical lineup will feature the Sugar Valley Community Band from 5-6 p.m., and from 7-9 p.m. Dusty Heggenstaller will sing a mixture of popular country and pop hits.
There will be carnival style games like dime pitch, ducky pond, "gone fishin," a ticket auction, and everyone's favorite, the cake wheel.
As with most events in Sugar Valley, if you leave hungry, it's your own fault. The Sugar Valley Lions Club, the Twilight Diner and the Cottage Restaurant will be on site selling a variety of foods including favorite fair munchies like hot sausage sandwiches, burgers, french fries and ice cream. Mr. Sticky sticky buns will also be available for purchase.
Car cruise
The annual Danny Tyson Car Cruise will take place on Sunday, May 26. Participants should meet at the Sugar Valley Rural Charter School parking lot at noon. The cruise will depart the school at 2 p.m. and will make a loop around Sugar Valley. All vehicles are welcome. The tentative rain date will be the following Saturday, June 1.
Memorial Day parade and program
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, the Sugar Valley Parade Committee presents the annual Loganton Memorial Day Parade honoring military personnel who died in service of their country.
In the morning hours, and during the parade, local churches set up food booths along the main drag. St. John's UCC of Tylersville will be at the intersection of Main and Mill Streets where they sell homemade pies and their famous ham barbecues; and outside the Albright United Methodist Church on East Main Street, church members will have hotdogs, drinks and chips for sale.
There will be a tractor show at the corner of East Main Street and Bishop Street, and all are welcome to stop and see the array of vintage and modern tractors on display.
The parade will begin at 2 p.m., and will form at the east end of Loganton, marching west, through most of West and East Main Streets. Lineup for parade participants is at 1 p.m. at the east end of Loganton. Floats and cars should line at the Dusty Boots grounds; and tractors and bands at the Sugar Valley Rural Charter School.
Immediately following the parade there will be a Memorial Day service in the center of town. Loganton Mayor Ashleigh Shadle, a representative from Clinton County Commissioners office, and Master of Ceremonies Scott Kemmerer, will all speak to the crowd, focusing on what Memorial Day means to a small town like Loganton.
Jeff Croak, Jr., Assistant Director/Veterans Service Officer for the Clinton County Veterans Affairs Office, will be the keynote speaker, and Pastor Strange from the Loganton Wesleyan Church will offer the invocation and benediction.
Sugar Valley native, 1st Sgt. Army Retired, John Wagner, Jr., will place the wreath at the Honor Roll at the Sugar Valley Armed Services Memorial.
Patriotic music will be performed by the Sugar Valley Community Band during the ceremony.
The Sugar Valley Community Fire Company will be selling charcoal grilled chicken dinners at their firehouse 30 minutes after the parade ends. Takeouts for chicken only (with no sides) are available starting at 10:30 a.m. Chicken dinners will be $16 each, and chicken halves are $8.
The fire company will be selling tickets for their annual raffle during the festival, and also on Memorial Day by volunteers walking the sidewalks before and during the parade. The drawing for the raffle will be after the chicken barbecue, at the firehall, at approximately 5:30 p.m.
