Williamsport Music Club plans evening of American songs, poetry
A patriotic evening of music and poetry is in store for Williamsport residents at 7 p.m., Nov. 19, when the Williamsport Music Club presents “United to Make American Music” at Pine Street United Methodist Church, 441 Pine St., Williamsport.
Ann Kaufman, vice president of the Williamsport Music Club, is the chair of this month’s program, which will feature a number of selections to honor veterans and their service. According to a news release, after the opening welcome and remarks by the president, the audience will participate in the reading of “The Federation Collect,” a prayer written for the National Federation of Music Clubs in 1929.
“This prayer expresses our deep gratitude for the gift of music,” the news release said.
The song and poem of the month will be presented by Kay Huffman and accompanied by Kristin Ivers.
Attendees, the news release said, will be delighted to listen to “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” and “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory” as performed by Dave Koskey on the organ. Additionally, Carol Waltz will play “America the Beautiful” and “The Star-Spangled Banner,” both arranged by well-known American composer James Callahan.
Soloists include Ryan Workman, tenor, and Jim Burget. Burget will recite “Old Ragged Flag,” as written by Johnny Cash. Ivers will accompany him on piano.
“Workman will captivate the audience with three pieces: ‘The Yankee Doodle Boy,’ ‘The House I Live In’ and ‘An American Triology,'” the news release said.
He will also be accompanied by Ivers.
To round out the evening of the Williamsport Music Club’s American music, the audience is invited to join in a sing-along of the “Armed Forces Medley,” the quintessential salute to each branch of the U.S. military.
The Williamsport Music Club is a member of the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs.
