Photographer to share tips for covering youth sports

The Susquehanna Valley Shutterbugs will highlight tips for photographing youth sports at their regular meeting at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the Thomas T. Taber Museum, 858 W. Fourth St., Williamsport.

The program, led by freelance photographer Ralph Wilson, will provide tips and suggestions geared towards parents, grandparents, students and fans that can help capture action and sideline images with the equipment they have on hand.

According to a news release, Wilson will talk briefly about what makes a good sports photo, camera and lens selection along with shooting angles for local high school and college venues. He will then take a deep dive into camera and menu settings to get more out of your camera’s technology.

The public is invited to this free presentation and encouraged to bring their camera along to walk through the menu options using their own equipment.

“I would prefer this to be more of a workshop experience than a presentation,” Wilson said and added he hopes everyone brings lots of questions and tips they have picked up along the way.

Wilson has been a freelance photojournalist and contributor to the Williamsport Sun-Gazette for 34 years. His coverage of the Little League World Series, the news release said, has appeared nationally from Boston to Honolulu. Other client work has included Associated Press, O Magazine, USA Today and Financial Times. He currently provides sports action photography to the Lycoming College and Pennsylvania College of Technology athletic departments as well as the Sun-Gazette.

According to the news release, the Susquehanna Valley Shutterbugs is a photography group in Lycoming County. In addition to monthly meetings, the Shutterbugs conduct two yearly photo shows. Meetings are held at the Thomas T. Taber Museum in Williamsport.

Starting at $2.99/week.
