Quilt show to feature veteran program

As part of this year’s Endless Mountains Quilt Guild’s Quilt Show, which will be held on Sept. 27 and 28, a Quilt of Valor award ceremony will be held to honor local Vietnam veteran Ray Scrievener.
According to a news release, the quilt that will be awarded was made by an Endless Mountains Quilt Guild member and friend of the recipient. The presentation will be made at the Endless Mountains Quilt Guild Show at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 27, in the cafeteria of the Lynch Bustin Elementary School, Athens.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national non-profit that was founded by Catherine Roberts in 2003 while her son was serving in the Gulf war.
“She had a dream — literally,” the news release said. “She saw a soldier sitting on a cot hunched over and distraught and then a hand wrapping him in a quilt and he was immediately comforted. The dream became a mission. The mission of QOVF is to honor service members and veterans who have been touched by war with a Quilt of Valor. Since 2003, 419,000 quilts have been awarded throughout the U.S., Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan and they honor service members and veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas of conflict throughout the world.”
Quilts of Valor quilts are all handmade by volunteer members — 10,000 members, 600 chapters across the country — from around the U.S.
The Bradford and Surrounding Counties’ Chapter of the program started in 2016 as a service project of the Friendship Quilters’ Group in Towanda. Since then, it has become an officially recognized chapter and has awarded over 350 quilts to local veterans and service members in the Bradford County Area.
“It is now thankfully supported by the Endless Mountains Quilt Guild and A Stitch in Time Guild of Tunkhannock,” the news release said.
