Music club to offer patriotic songs, poems

The Williamsport Music Club will present its traditional National Federation of Music Clubs’ program”Parade of American Music” at 7 p.m., Nov. 25 in the sanctuary of Pine Street United Methodist Church, 441 Pine St., Williamsport.

According to a news release, Marilyn Burget and Marilyn Kern are program chairs and have chosen to title the program “Celebrating Patriotism in the USA.”

The program will begin with Club President Ryan Workman leading the attendees in the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. It will be followed by everyone singing the “Star Spangled Banner,” which will be led by Kristin Ivers, president of the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs.

The song “Red Wing” and the poem “The South Wind” will be presented by Leatha Kieser, past president and Carol Waltz, past president.

Keeping with the patriotic theme, Burget will read “George Washington’s Top Five Patriotic Songs (as Imagined by AI).” Jamie Chambers will then perform a piccolo solo, “Yankee Doodle,” a tradition song written in George Washington’s time.

The WMC Outreach Ensemble will sing “This is My Country” by Don Raye and Al Jacobs followed by “Pennsylvania” by G.M. Roher.

Waltz will play the accompaniment, Kieser will direct the ensemble, the news release said. The following music club members are participants in the ensemble: Mitzi Burget, Katy Cimini, Charlie Getchell, Wayne Harris, Kay Huffman, Kristin Ivers, Marilyn Kern, Margaret Piper, Beth Regan, Nora Slattery, George Ulrich, Trisha Wheelen, Ann Workman and Ryan Workman.

Club member Jim Burget will recite Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” with Kristin Ivers playing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” as background music. The attendees will then sing the first verse of the song.

Wayne Harris, the news release said, will perform “Proud to Be an American” by Lee Greenwood with Kristin Ivers accompanying on the piano. Scott Shell and his guitar student, Jaden Brown, will perform “This Land is Your Land,” by Woody Guthrie. This will be followed by an audience sing-along, led by Leatha Kieser and Carol Waltz.

Members of the armed forces will be recognized by standing when the “Songs of the Armed Forces” is sung by all attendees. The finale will be an organ piece performed by Leatha Kieser and Carol Waltz, John Phillip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes.”

Following this event, the Williamsport Music Club’s next program will be “Candlelight: a Christmas Gift to the Community” at 4 p.m., Dec. 7 at Pine Street United Methodist Church.
