RENOVO — On a campus where no sport is bigger or more successful than softball, the atmosphere couldn’t have been more enthusiastic for two Penn State University softball players Monday afternoon at the Renovo Elementary School.

Nittany Lions’ second baseman, Michela Barbanete, and pitcher, Bridget Nemeth, visited the school as part of Read Across America, a nationwide reading celebration that promotes the importance of reading, especially for children.

Before the student athletes arrived, a hype video played so the students could be prepared for the two special guests.

After Michela and Bridget arrived, the “We Are Penn State” cheer broke out from the enthusiastic crowd. The only thing left was for “Sirius” to play as the two Penn State athletes were formally introduced.

Following a raucous welcoming, Bridget offered to perform a rap stemming from any three words that students offered, setting the tone for the fun afternoon to follow.

The two Penn State athletes quickly realized the response they were receiving reached its peak when they would do the alternating up and down hand gesture that accompanies the ever-now-famous “6-7” pop culture phenomenon, bringing a constant barrage of cheers and laughter.

The school organizers drew names, chosen at random, as a student from each grade level received signed softballs from the two Penn State stars.

Smiles, hugs and high fives took place as each lucky winner received their new prized souvenir.

Following the assembly in the gym it was time for the real reason that the softball players were at the school for the afternoon. After breaking into smaller grade levels, the student athletes each read books to the students.

Again, the Nittany Lions captured the kids’ attention and imagination as they also hoped to promote reading to the impressionable students.

“It was an amazing day; the girls exceeded my expectations,” said Renovo Elementary Interventionalist Rachel Casper. “They complemented how beautiful the area is and how well behaved our students were.”

“Michaela and Bridgette were so personable and really enjoyed reading with our students” continued Casper. “Their interactions with the students were wonderful, they spoke to the students about believing in themselves, being kind and working together as a team.”
