4-H volunteers get creative with needle felting

During May and June, 4-H volunteers from Lycoming and Montour counties came together for a creative and relaxing three-week workshop focused on creating 2D needle-felted artwork. According to a news release, a total of 13 adult volunteers participated in the workshop, including six volunteers from Lycoming County.
"What is needle felting?" The news release asks. "Needle felting is a dry-felting craft that uses specialized notched or barbed needles to sculpt unspun wool into 2D or 3D projects. As the needle is pushed into the wool, the barbs catch and interlock the fibers, gradually compressing and shaping the wool into a picture or solid form."
Volunteers began their projects by selecting a kit containing the materials needed to complete their artwork. Each kit included directions, needles, wool, and batting--essential supplies for creating a 2D needle-felted project. Before beginning their final pieces, participants practiced a variety of basic shapes and techniques to become more familiar with the needle-felting process.
Over the three weeks, volunteers worked on developing their individual projects while learning from and encouraging one another, the news release said. At the conclusion of the workshop, each participant left with a completed wool fiber creation that could be framed or displayed in an embroidery hoop.
The completed projects were showcased as part of an educational display at the Lycoming County Fair in July, providing an opportunity for fair visitors to learn more about needle felting and the creative projects being explored by 4-H volunteers.
"In addition to learning a new creative skill, participants appreciated the opportunity to connect with fellow 4-H leaders in a relaxed and welcoming setting. The workshop provided a chance to unwind, share ideas, build relationships, and simply enjoy an 'adult night out,'" the news release said. "The success and enthusiasm surrounding this workshop demonstrated the value of creating opportunities for 4-H volunteers to connect, learn, and have fun together. Based on the positive response, additional 'Leaders' Nights Out' are planned for the future!"
