Loyalsock Foundation recently announced that it is the recipient of a $4,000 Healing the Planet grant from The GIANT Company, known locally as Giant and Martin's and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to encourage the planting of more native species in local communities.
According to a news release, Loyalsock Foundation will use the funding to remove invasive honeysuckle at the entrance to The Summit: Center for Wellness in Laporte and replace it with native Pennsylvania mountain laurel and rhododendron shrubs. The mountain laurel and rhododendron will create a natural landscape to support native pollinators and wildlife.
The planting project will be completed in Fall 2026 with support from volunteers from Mokoma Conservancy, the Sullivan County High School Envirothon team and Ski Club, and Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy.
"GIANT and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful awarded $100,000 in 2026 in support of 21 projects focused on tree planting projects across Pennsylvania," the news release said. "Native trees play a critical role in protecting local ecosystems. Community plantings foster shared responsibility and stewardship, while strengthening social ties. Tree planting efforts also help improve the appearance and safety of our communities, which can support long-term economic development."
