The Notre Dame Club of Greater Williamsport began as a booster club in May of 1996. Established by three local men, Gene Riedy, Don Dooris and John Slattery "who envisioned an outlet for alumni and subway alum to support the University of Notre Dame," a news release said. "The purpose of the club is to bring together all interested persons who support the University of Notre Dame and believe in its principles, Christian life, education and athletic programs."
The clubs first meeting was held at the old Joey's Place 505 Washington Blvd., which is now 505 Restaurant. The club has met at various locations through the years but ironically, the club presently holds their monthly meetings at 505 Restaurant on Washington Blvd.
In 2014 the club became a sanctioned Alumni Club through the university. The club encompasses a large area including Allenwood to Coudersport with a membership of 120 members.
Through the years the club's community service "Lend a Helping Hand" project has contributed to individuals with a special need and organizations such as Code Blue, local fire companies, Special Olympics. Salvation Army, and various veteran organizations to name a few. Other community service activities include volunteering at Central PA Food Bank during Global Day of Service and partaking in Wreaths Across America.
"Supporting area Notre Dame students since its inception, the club has established a scholarship fund through the University of Notre Dame," the news release said. "A sendoff picnic was held Aug 5th and is held annually to honor students attending Notre Dame.
Activities hosted by the club include banquets with notable guest speakers, game watches, student sendoff picnic, football bus trips, Crosscutters outing and meetings held in February, August through November. In December the club hosts a Christmas dinner.
Membership is open to alumni and subway alum. For information about the club please contact Nancy Dorman, Club President at 570 323 5522 or ndclubwmpt@comcast.net. The club can also be followed on Facebook by searching Notre Dame Club of Greater Williamsport.
