Harriet Tubman, county fairs focus of 2 events at museum

"Harriet Tubman,” a conductor on the Underground Railroad, will appear at the Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society, at 2 p.m., Sept. 19. The presentation, titled "Follow the Drinking Gourd," celebrates America250 and is free and open to the public.

"With a background in education and a passion for storytelling, Dr. Century uses her theatrical talents to embody figures such as Harriet Tubman, Bessie Coleman, Madam C. J. Walker, Mary Fields, Phillis Wheatley, Hatshepsut, Cathy Williams (female Buffalo soldier) and Sojourner Truth," a news release said. "Her performances blend dramatic monologue, period costume, and interactive dialogue, making history accessible and engaging for audiences of all ages. Dr. Century's work has been featured at schools, museums, colleges, Historical Societies, churches, and cultural events across the United States. She has traveled to 30 states thus far. She is deeply committed to historical accuracy and education, using her presentations to illuminate the lives and legacies of trailblazing women and inspire curiosity about the past."
"Harriet Tubman was a fearless freedom fighter, abolitionist, and humanitarian whose courage changed American history," the news release said. "Born into slavery in Maryland, she escaped to freedom and returned again and again to guide others to safety through the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, she served as a scout, spy, and nurse for the Union Army, and she later supported women's suffrage. Her legacy of bravery, justice, and hope continues to inspire people today."
The Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society will also host photographer Arthur Sterngold at its Society Program at 2 p.m., Sept. 20. Sterngold, a retired Lycoming College professor, will present "Pigs, People, Ribbons and Rides: A photographic odyssey through the county fairs of the Pennsylvania Heartland."
The presentation is a "journey into one of our region's most enduring community traditions," a news release said. "Looking beyond the tractor pulls and funnel cake stands, Sterngold uses his photography to explore the people, places and unexpected moments that give county fairs their distinctive character. The presentation is free and open to the public and will be held in the Community Room of the museum."
As this lecture coincides with the third Sunday of the month, admission to the museum is free. The museum is located at 858 W. Fourth St., Williamsport.
