The Williamsport City Jazz Orchestra recently announced three free concerts this month: Sunday, Aug. 23 at the Brandon Park Bandshell, Friday Aug. 28 at Williamsport Welcomes the World, and Saturday, Aug. 29 at Central Oak Heights in West Milton.
According to a news release, the historic 1913 Dr. Kenneth Cooper Bandshell in Brandon Park underwent a major restoration recently and to celebrate the project's completion, the City of Williamsport's Recreation Department has been presenting a summer concert series this year.
"Bring your lawn chair and join us for a free concert at 6 p.m. on August 23, sponsored by Wegmans," the news release said. "The WCJO will again celebrate the Little League World Series at the Williamsport Welcomes the World event on Friday, August 28 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Pine Street. WWTW, presented by the city and the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, is attended by over 20,000 people, the city's largest annual street party. This year the party will feature the WCJO Combo, an ensemble of eight members of the full jazz orchestra. On Saturday, August 29 head to West Milton for the annual free WCJO concert held in the beautiful open-air Tabernacle on the grounds of Central Oak Heights, 7-8 p.m. Ice cream will be available after the concert!"
The WCJO was founded as a 501(c)(3) in 2011 to showcase the immense amount of talent in the Williamsport area. Members include alumni of the Glenn Miller Big Band, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Buddy Rich Band, and many other reknowned jazz ensembles. The orchestra plays an exciting variety of big band tunes, from the popular and familiar to the obscure and new, and the performances are sure to appeal to all. The WCJO presents multiple concerts throughout the year such as the popular annual Holiday Jazz concerts, the annual WCJO Jazz Fest, and free summer concerts in the area. The ensemble also provides education workshops and opportunities for students throughout the year.
