Bloomsburg University presents Celebrity Artists’ Series
BLOOMSBURG — The acclaimed Bloomsburg University Celebrity Artists’ Series is ready to welcome a couple of high octane concerts.
Closely following the students’ academic calendar, Bloomsburg University divides its celebrity attractions between two “semesters.”
After last fall’s two touring Broadway-styled productions “Broadway’s Next Hit Musical” and “Elf, the Musical,” the Celebrity Series turns the focus to its concert lineup in the current spring semester.
Bloomsburg University utilizes both the 1800 seats of Mitirani Hall in Haas Center, and the K.S. Gross Auditorium’s 600 seats in the Victorian-style Carver Hall as venues for its Celebrity Series.
• The Suffers, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Mitrani Hall — This ten piece “soul collective,” which was formed in Houston in 2002, claims to get its inspiration from the environment. The American soul band blends blues, soul, country, Caribbean, Cajun and hip hop influences. The Suffers’ music brings a fresh approach to what they call the Gulf Coast Sound. That “Sound” is defined as mixing different music styles and cultures performed around the Gulf Coast area.
Reportedly, with growing popularity, they have garnered such a broad audience, so broad and varied that The Suffers may prove to be “the panacea for a live and jaded and stratified live music scene.”
• Blind Boys of Alabama, 7:30 p.m. March 26, Mitrani Hall — One of the most decorated and recognizable music roots groups, the “Blind Boys” originated seven decades ago. They flourished while touring in the South in the 40’s and 50’s, primarily because of the unique sound, which blended the close harmonies of early jubilee Gospel with the more fervent improvisations of hard Gospel music.
Despite some setbacks as audiences dwindled, when the “Blind Boys” refused to switch to secular music, they make a remarkable “comeback.” Perseverance paid off as they eventually won five Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy and were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
The Blind Boys of Alabama’s appearance in the Celebrity Artists’ Series should solidify their status as not only gospel singers, borrowing from old traditions, but living legends and modern day innovators.
