The Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State will premiere an online program by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. “Front Row: National” will kick off with a stream of its “Summer Evenings II” concert at 7:30 tonight, according to a news release. It will be available for streaming at cpa.psu.edu through Monday, Oct. 5.

Contributions from the members of the Center for the Performing Arts and a grant from the University Park Student Fee Board help make the program free of charge. The program is part of the center’s “Up Close and Virtual” fall season.

The “Front Row: National” series features chamber music performances presented to audiences in their own homes.

“The virtual concert collection features beautifully shot, full-length HD performance videos from the society’s archive, curated by organization co-artistic directors David Finckel and Wu Han, plus insight from artists who have previously performed at the Center for the Performing Arts,” the news release said.

The presentation of “Summer Evenings II” was recorded in July and will be introduced by Finckel and Han. The program will include three full performances:

• Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzon XVI a 12, C. 209, featuring The Cellists of Lincoln Center: Finckel, Sumire Kudo, Sarina Zhang, Timothy Eddy, Rafael Figueroa, Dmitri Atapine, James Jeonghwan Kim, Richard Aaron, Carter Brey, Yi Qun Xu, Kevin Mills and Jerry Grossman;

• Ludwig van Beethoven’s Trio in B-flat Major for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, Op. 11, performed by Anthony McGill, clarinet; Alisa Weilerstein, cello; and Inon Barnatan, piano; and

• Sergei Rachmanoniv’s Suite No. 2 in C minor for Two Pianos, Op. 17, performed by Qian Wu, piano, and Anne-Marie McDermott, piano.

Following each performance, Finckel and Han will host a discussion with McGill and Wu, the news release said. Finckel and Han previously performed at the center as a duo in 2005, and with violinist Philip Setzer in 2017 and 2018 to perform the Beethoven Piano Trios. Finckel also performed at Penn State — in 1990, 2002 and 2009 — when he was a member of Emerson String Quartet.

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center is one of 11 constituents of the largest performing arts complex in the world, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which includes the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, Lincoln Center Theater and The Metropolitan Opera.

“The society is known for the extraordinary quality of its performances and its programming, and for setting the benchmark for chamber music worldwide,” the news release said. “The music society created ‘Front Row: National’ to allow audiences to experience chamber music in a meaningful and innovative way — from the virtual ‘front row.’ The Center for the Performing Arts will host three of the society’s ‘Summer Evenings’ series performances this fall. Each program will feature a Baroque work, a classical piece and a favorite of the Romantic era.”
