Schedule set for playhouse

After COVID-19 forced the historic barn playhouse to go dark last summer, Millbrook is coming back this summer for its 58th season.

David Leidholdt, producing artistic director, announces two major changes in the upcoming season’s format: all Millbrook shows will be presented on the Main Stage, and the “season” will be split between the “Summer” and the “Fall/Winter” productions.

Summer shows

• “Elephant & Piggie’s ‘We Are in a Play’ ” (June 19 & 26 at 10 a.m. and June 20 & 27 at 2 p.m.) — Billed as a vaudevillian romp, and geared primarily for a younger audience, this leadoff attraction will be presented on the Courtyard Stage.

• “Yours Sincerely, A Sentimental Journey” (July 9 -18) — Written by Shannon Agnew, this “heart-warming and toe-tapping musical” salutes local Clinton County veterans through hit songs of the day, dances, and stories of their time in the service in their own words.

• “American Songwriters” (July 22 – 24) — This retrospective journey, by “acclaimed performers” Chris Bilisset and Larry Tobias, is a tribute to the songwriting talents and musical careers of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and George Jones.

• “Grand Legends” (July 30 – Aug. 7) — After his rousing role as Jerry Lee Lewis in Millbrook’s “Million Dollar Quartet” a few summers ago, Brandon Fillette returns for a “wild ride through pop, rock, country hits and show tunes.”

Fall and Winter shows

• “Popcorn Falls” (Sept. 10 – 18)– James Hindman penned this comedy about a sleepy town, whose can only saved from bankruptcy if it can stage a money-making play within a week. Problems: No playhouse — and no play!

• “Vanities, the New Musical” (Oct. 1 – 9) — A funny and poignant snapshot musical which chronicles the journey of three Texas girls, from their teenage cheerleading years, to sorority sisters, to housewives to liberated women and beyond.

• “Deathtrap” (Oct. 27 – 30) — Ira Levin’s famous thriller follows a blocked writer of Broadway shows, who seizes the chance to return to glory, if he can only persuade a student to forsake credit for a new mystery, with its own share of twists and turns.

• “Nunsense II – The Second Coming” (Nov. 12-30) — Dan Googgin follows up his “Nunsense” musical with another effort by the show biz-minded Little Sisters of Hoboken. The good nuns sing and dance around the Mount St Helen’s stage with spirited, zany abandon.

Although individual tickets for shows are offered, discounted season flex packages are also for sale. General Manager David Gritzner notes that not all of Millbrook’s 2021 productions are priced the same.
