Event, organization share anniversary celebration

Celebrating 60 years of Lycoming Arts and 20 years of First Friday, the Aug. 6 First Friday event will be multifaceted with live performances as well as additional events from other local organizations.

“It is going to be a big celebration,” said Shanin Dougherty, co-chair of the First Friday Committee for Lycoming Arts.

The rain-or-shine event will have Clyde Frog performing from 6 to 8 p.m. on Pine Street. If it does rain, the performance will move to The Genetti Hotel.

The music won’t stop there — Suzuki Violin students will also be performing, but at the corner of Fourth and Market streets near Lamar Park, also between 6 and 8 p.m.

Last month’s rainy event was still well-visited with locals crowding the streets for the local food trucks and artists, but the big hit, “selfie-wall” will return.

“I think people really enjoyed it … It was very well-received,” Dougherty said. “It created a lot of activity.”

The design for the selfie-wall is not yet determined, though Dougherty said it will have an “anniversary theme” alongside the Lycoming Arts and UPMC logos, as UPMC is the event’s sponsor.

This month’s art to go craft for kids will be “beachy crabs” Dougherty added. The craft can be found at the Lycoming Arts building on West Fourth Street.

“Of course we will also be giving out stickers to commemorate the event,” Dougherty said.

She also said that Lycoming Arts is looking into doing street decor as well.

“Just the little touches to make it more exciting,” she said.

Last month’s rainy event still had a “wonderful turn out”, Dougherty said. There were locals walking throughout the streets with their umbrellas waiting for musicians to perform and in line for their favorite local foods.

“We are hoping for the same, but without the rain this time,” she said.

There are also other events happening from Lycoming County’s United Way in partnership with The Brickyard and the Kiwanis Club putting on kid-centric events for Kids First Friday in Pine Square and in the parking lot between Woodland’s Bank and Bullfrog Brewery.

First Friday happens every first Friday of the month, rain or shine. The event will begin at 5 p.m. and West Fourth Street from Market to Hepburn streets will be pedestrian only beginning at 4 p.m. Parking will not be allowed on West Fourth Street after 3 p.m. There will be plenty of parking around the downtown area. The Williamsport First Friday Facebook page will have a map available for parking as well as additional information.

The stores will remain open later for First Friday.
