Free Comic Book Day to bring artists to South Side

TIM WERTZ/Sun-Gazette

Isle of Comics in South Williamsport is one of the thousands of comic book shops around the world celebrating the largest event in the comic book industry from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 14 — Free Comic Book Day.

For the event, Isle of Comics will host award-winning Archie comic book artist Dan Parent; Dave Sharpe, who has been an artist and letterer for Aftershock, DC, and Valiant; Darren Auck of Marvel, Ren & Stimpy and Rocko’s Modern Life; Howie Noel, a South Williamsport native working for Image Comics; Bryn Allen; Mike Hunter; Topaz Strange; Kyle Witcoski; Jared Brown and more local artists, writers and creators.

“With awesome titles like Dan’s book ‘Archie: Past, Present & Future Fun,’ Dave’s book ‘We Live: the Last Days,’ and others like ‘Spider-Man/Venom,’ ‘Star Wars: High Republic,’ and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ — just to name a few, we’re sure there’s a comic book for everyone,” said Tracey Yeagle, owner of Isle of Comics, according to a news release. “Comics are a fun and enduring form of entertainment for readers of all ages to dive into as imagination comes to life. Whether it be popular comics, film, television shows or video games, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

According to the news release, each year, thousands of participating stores give over six million comic books to millions of fans to introduce them to the wonders of comics.

“Free Comic Book Day is a great event for the whole community. Bringing everyone together, finding books for everyone to enjoy, and seeing people of all ages–children, teens and adults–sharing our passion for comics is incredible,” said Yeagle. “Even if you’ve never picked up a comic book, we want to welcome everyone to Isle Of Comics on Aug. 14, because there are so many amazing comics this year and we can’t wait to share them.”

This is the fourth year Isle of Comics celebrates Free Comic Book Day, offering the community a fun, family-oriented event where everyone can find a comic they’ll enjoy, the news release said.
