League to perform murder musical

The Community Theatre League in downtown Williamsport will open its 45th season with “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” from Sept. 10 through Sept. 19.

A murderous farce filled with unforgettable music, non-stop laughs, and a scene-stealing role for one actor playing all eight of the doomed heirs who meet their ends in the most creative and side-splitting ways.

When the low-born Monty Navarro finds out that he’s eighth in line for an earldom in the lofty D’Ysquith family, he figures his chances of outliving his predecessors are slight and sets off down a far more ghoulish path. Can he knock off his unsuspecting relatives without being caught and become the ninth Earl of Highhurst? And what of love? Because murder isn’t the only thing on Monty’s mind.

“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” is the knock-’em-dead, uproarious hit and the most-nominated show of the 2014 season, a news release said. With 10 Tony nominations and four wins, including Best Musical, Book, Direction and Costumes, it also earned seven Drama Desk Awards (including Best Musical), four Outer Critics Circle Awards (including Best Musical) and one Drama League Award (Best Musical).

“I am usually on stage so it’s been a learning curve for me,” director Miki Rebeck, who is making her directorial debut at CTL, said, according to the news release. “I am blessed to be working in collaboration with an incredible production crew that makes my job as director easier. Working with this cast has also been a blessing. I am continuously impressed and awed at what they bring to the table as performers.”

Shanice Brandon, playing the role of Phoebe, says she is “Absolutely over the moon with excitement to be playing the role of Phoebe! In 2014 I sang along to Gentleman’s Guide karaoke tracks in my college dorm room and would never have believed that performing that role on stage was even a possibility. Phoebe, as a character, is so much more than your stereotypical musical ingenue. She’s tender-hearted, driven, and so incredibly smart. I can’t wait to bring her to the stage.”
