Music Club presents 83rd Christmas Music by Candlelight

The Williamsport Music Club invites the community to attend its Music by Candlelight program, slated for 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5.

The Pine Street United Methodist Church, 441 Pine St., Williamsport, will host this event, which has been held annually — with the exception of 2020 due to COVID-19 — since the club’s organization in 1937.

Kay Huffman, longtime member, is chair of the program featuring beloved Christmas music.

Soloists will include Scott Schell, baritone and guitarist, who will premier his composition, “The Shepard’s Surprise,” written for this event. Pianist Laurel Wolgemuth, a sophomore student at Lycoming College, will play “Away in a Manger” and “Ukrainian Bell Carol.” Both pieces are arranged by Joseph Martin.

Several ensembles will present traditional Christmas pieces. A handbell quartet from Pine Street United Methodist Church under the direction of Karl Ivers will play “I Heard the Bells.” He will be joined by ringers Charles Getchell, Lynne Koskie and Jane McGinnis.

Lucy Henry will direct a flute quartet performing “Coventry Carol,” “Carol of the Bells” arranged by Wilhousky, and “Gesu Bambino” arranged by Gibson. Henry performs with flutists Alicia Little, Nancy Moff and Jan Warren.

The Williamsport Music Club Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Huffman and accompanied by Carol Waltz, will sing three familiar carols: “Come Thou Long- Expected Jesus,” “There’s a Song in the Air,” and “Do You Hear What I Hear.”

Members of the choir are Betsy Belcher, Marilyn Burget, Kathy Cimini, Carl Folk, Barbara Folk, Charles Getchell, Wayne Harris, Suzanne Heilman, Lucy Henry, Janet Hurlbert, Karl Ives, Charles Johnson, Donna Johnson, Marilyn Kern, Leatha Kieser, Shirley Knade, Lynne Koskie, Nancy Moff, Margaret Piper, Bonnie Seltzer, Carmen Spinney, Georgia Ulrich, Mark VanValin and Jan Warren.

Organ music for the program will include a prelude with Leatha Kieser playing “Greensleeves” by Richard Purvis. Janet Hurlbert will close with Bach’s “In Dulci Jubilo” as the postlude. Attendees will join in singing “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” and “Joy to the World.”

An offering will be collected during the program to benefit the House of Hope, part of the Sojourner Truth Ministries. Attendees will be greeted by Marilyn Kern and Janet Hurlbert.

Membership in the Williamsport Music Club is open to all and does not require participation in performances. The club is a member of the State and National Federations of Music Clubs.
