Rap for Charity: Concert raises hundreds for local groups

Rapper Lil Rekk performs at the Pajama Factory on Aug. 13 as part of a charity concert benefiting Lycoming Family Promise and Susquehanna Health.

It’s all about giving back to the community, said Gavin Loomis, head of operations for Looming Shows.

Looming Shows hosted a Rap for Charity concert recently at the Pajama Factory, 1307 Park Ave., Williamsport, to raise money for Lycoming Family Promise and Susquehanna Health.

“This was my second charity concert. I aim to do one a year,” Loomis said. “I’m in the position where I can give back, so I’m trying to do that.”

Formerly of Mansfield, Loomis, who now calls Pittsburgh home, is making it a point to include charity shows in his concert lineup.

Though his home address has changed, Loomis still considers the Mansfield and Williamsport areas his home region, and hopes to put together at least one concert per year here, he said.

The organizations selected to benefit from this year’s concert were chosen based on community input, Loomis said, as well as on his own research.

“I like what they (Family Promise) do, helping people out around the city,” he said. “I wish I could add more (charities) — hopefully, in time. Maybe next year.”

After expenses, the concert pulled in about $430 for the two organizations, he said.

Performers included Lil Rekk, 570JV and Lil Kurrr with support from YLN Rari, NEV!N, LilGhost, Sme Dro$e, 1902LilShaen and TaeBandzz — all of whom are from the Williamsport area or once were.

“You gotta help out the local community,” Loomis said. “We can’t do it without the community.”

Though he also aims to branch out to other genres of music as he organizes future concerts, “growing up, (rap) was my favorite genre, so that’s what I stick to,” Loomis said.

“Big shout out to the artists who performed,” he added. “I’ve worked with some of them before, and they’re all supportive.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
