St. Nell’s presents: The Plus-Ones — A night of comedy at the Pajama Factory

What do you get when you cross a New York City-based show-runner with a pandemic that shuts down half the world?

New comedy shows in Williamsport, apparently.

Emily Flake, a writer, illustrator, performer and New Yorker cartoonist from Brooklyn, added Williamsport to her world view in 2020 when she and her husband were looking for affordable venues amid the pandemic.

“Everything in terms of my plans and plans for my daughter sh** the bed, for obvious reasons,” Flake said of the pandemic’s beginnings. “Everything upstate and in New England was crazy expensive, so we started looking in Pennsylvania. I legitimately have completely fallen in love with Williamsport. It’s a really beautiful town, we’ve made some wonderful friends. I am all in on Williamsport.”

Flake and her husband jumped at the opportunity to purchase a Vallamont home in December 2020 and turn it into a writing residency for women and non-binary people, St. Nell’s Humor Writing Residency for Ladies. The couple made many friends and contacts while working on the home.

Now, Flake is ready to bring on the laughs.

A mix of New York City and local comedians will take the stage starting at 8 p.m. Saturday in Clerestory at the Pajama Factory, 1307 Park Ave.

Here’s a look at the performers:

BILLY KELLY

A Grammy-nominated entertainer who keeps it family-friendly, Billy Kelly has opened for former President Barack Obama, duetted with Davy Jones of The Monkees and has created an all-ages stand-up comedy special for Audible called “This Is a Family Show!” The New York Times lauded Kelly’s stand-up as “Laughter without lewdness … humor that the generations can enjoy together.”

RASHEED WESLEY

Williamsport’s Rasheed Wesley Jr. has performed across the east coast and in various comedy festivals. He also holds regular spots at Broadway Comedy Club and Greenwich Village Comedy Club in New York City. Wesley placed first at SpiteFest 2021 and has been accepted to both the Turnpike and Finger Lakes comedy festivals. He filmed and recorded his debut special and album, “Sheed’s Perfect Day,” over the summer.

GASTOR ALMONTE

Brooklyn comedian and storyteller Gastor Almonte has appeared on various Comedy Central specials, Vice Live and the PBS feature Stories From the Stage, which earned him the 2020 Webby People’s Voice award for Best Individual Performance. His debut album, “Immigrant Made,” hit No. 1 on the iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Music comedy charts, and the corresponding special can be watched on Amazon Prime Video.

JESS SALOMON

Jess Salomon is a New York-based Canadian comedian who has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. “She handles dark, sometimes dirty and often political topics with a light touch,” according to her website, www.jesssalomon.com. She also is one-half of the comedy duo, “The El-Salomons,” with her wife Eman El-Husseini. The couple’s comedy special, “Marriage of Convenience,” recorded at Just for Laughs, is available on YouTube. They also co-host the popular show and podcast “Comedians vs the News” on the BBC World Service.

KENICE MOBLEY

Also from Brooklyn, Kenice Mobley has performed stand-up worldwide and recently made her late-night debut on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She was listed as one of Vulture’s Comedians You Should and Will Know in 2021 and, earlier this year, performed at the Netflix Is a Joke Festival as part of the taped show, “Introducing…” Mobley worked on the BET Awards, Color of Change’s sketch comedy series “By Us For Us,” and is currently part of the Creators Program at Comedy Central.

Though the show remains a few days away, Flake is already looking forward to the next one.

“We’re chuggin’ along. I love comedy, I love Williamsport, I love putting on shows. It was kind of the natural progression of things,” she said. “I want to do this as often as I can.”

With a diverse cast of comedians sporting diverse styles of comedy, there’s sure to be a joke here for everyone. However, not all performances will be family-friendly and there will be alcohol involved, so it’s recommended folks find sitters for their children.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.eventbrite.com or at the door.

Starting at $2.99/week.
