Local artist Steve Gibson, of Milton Art Academy, to paint mural at Piers Art Park in Lewisburg
LEWISBURG — Artist Steve Gibson, founder of Milton Art Academy, will lend his artistic touch to the Piers Art Park, 539 Cherry Alley, Lewisburg — and folks can catch a peek around noon Saturday, weather permitting.
With a grant from the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership thanks to the state Council on the Arts, Gibson will create an outdoor temporary public mural across 18 of the piers, an arc of 32 concrete monoliths that are one of the most prominent industrial ruins in the area, according to a recent press release from the partnership.
“When I moved to the area back in 2008, I was immediately curious about the piers. I love that attention is being put on them with concerts and events, and am really happy to contribute something so more people can find them and also say ‘what the heck are those things?'” Gibson said.
For years, the Piers Art Park has been “a neglected, underutilized hidden gem in Lewisburg,” according to the press release. The space is centrally located to Lewisburg downtown businesses and the Rail Trail.
“Our goal is to transform what has been just a space, into a place. For decades, Lewisburg’s own standing stones have been overlooked,” said Lynne Ragusea, of the downtown partnership. “We envision site-specific art, music and dance performances, community yoga and Tai Chi, art classes open to the public and more.”
Gibson plans to be on site painting the mural throughout the month.
In conjunction with Lewisburg’s Stroll Through the Arts, the public is invited to stroll down to the piers on from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday to watch the artist at work.
“My hope is that people that see the piers will get a kick out of the art project and enjoy experiencing this parallax visual trick,” Gibson said.
