Say ‘freeze’: Annual Heart of Lewisburg Ice Festival, Polar Bear Plunge are almost here

You don’t have to wait for the heat of the summer to have a good time outdoors.

The annual Heart of Lewisburg Ice Festival is drawing near, with myriad adult- and family-friendly activities to make everyone happy, starting early Friday, Feb. 3, and continuing all day Saturday, Feb. 4.

Starting at 10 a.m. Friday in front of the post office, at the corner of Third and Market streets and later moving to Hufnagle Park in Lewisburg, ice carving is expected to last all day. In the end, there will be nearly 40 sculptures sparkling in the park.

Brushstrokes Gallery, Art Supplies and Framing will again host its Warm Your Heart fundraiser, offering one-of-a-kind paintings, drawings and clay pieces by in-house artists in exchange for a $25-minimum donation to benefit The Scratching Post–Lewisburg Cat Cafe and Haven to Home Canine Rescue. Art will be available starting at 11 a.m. Friday.

The fundraiser was first held in 2009 and has raised over $16,000 for local animal rescues.

A Sip and Stroll event offers adults 21 and older a fun evening on the town from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with ticketholders invited to explore downtown Lewisburg while sampling wine, spirits and snacks at participating businesses.

Registration is required and ID will be verified day-of at 328 Market St. in order for participants to receive the necessary wristband, as well as a reusable cup, map of the event and a goodies bag.

Saturday offers a larger variety of events including a chocolate festival, children’s activities, the Frosty 5K and the ever-popular Polar Bear Plunge.

With registration starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Campus Theatre, 413 Market St., the Sunset Rotary’s Frosty 5K will kick off part two of the Ice Festival.

The race begins at 9:30 a.m., leading runners through historic Lewisburg. An awards ceremony is slated for 10:30 a.m. — with cash prizes available for the top participants.

Proceeds from the 5K will benefit the Merrill W. Linn Land & Waterways Conservancy.

Children’s activities will be available in Hufnagle Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., provided by the conservancy as well as the Lewisburg Children’s Museum and River Valley Nature School.

There also will be several vendors lining Market Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Gilson Snow squad returns with the Pregame the Plunge pub crawl, starting at 11 a.m. at Trevina, 434 Market St., stopping at Hungry Run Distilling, 323 Market St., then joining Rusty Rail Brewery at Brasserie Louis, 101 Market St.

The crawl will turn into a parade at the corner of South Front and Market streets, led by a marching band, heading toward the Polar Bear Plunge launch site at about 2 p.m.

Those willing to brave the icy Susquehanna will take their brisk dip at about 2:30 p.m. Proceeds from Pregame the Plunge will benefit Lewisburg Neighborhoods, the organization hosting the plunge.

Thaw out at the chili cookoff, hosted by Sunrise Rotary, at 3 p.m. at the Bull Run Tap House, 605 Market St.

Sample chili made by guest chefs from local restaurants and vote for your favorite in support of the Union County Giving Closet.

The Donald L. Heiter Community Center, a nonprofit organization providing diverse, multigenerational activities and programs to the community, will cap off the weekend with its 25th annual Chocolate Festival.

A chocolate tour will be offered Saturday, with the main fundraising gala beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Lewisburg Hotel, 136 Market St.
