Rialto Theatre hosts Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, silent feature
CANTON — For one show only, live music will accompany a famous silent comedy at the Rialto Theatre on Thursday, May 4 at 7 p.m. Paragon Ragtime Orchestra will come to Canton to play the original orchestral score of Harold Lloyd’s “Safety Last!” (1923) during the screening which is also set to include Vitagraph Studio’s 1926 short, “The Weak-End Driver” that will also be accompanied with the original music and live sound effects, according to the news release.
“Safety Last!” stars Harold Lloyd as a young department store clerk who has to climb outside of a downtown skyscraper to keep his job and his fiance, who is played by Mildred Davis.
“It’s one of the funniest movies ever made, and this special livescore production was last performed by PRO for Turner Classic Movies in Atlanta, Georgia,” the news release said.
PRO was founded and directed by Rick Benjamin and is the “world’s only full-time professional ensemble performing the music of silent films, early Broadway and vintage dance,” the news release said.
PRO has had the opportunity to tour in 49 states and seven countries and has been featured in productions by Disney, HBO, FX, PBS, TCM and the BBC.
Tickets for this one-time event are $15.00 for adults and $5.00 for children and can be purchased in advance at www.cantonrialto.org or by calling 570-692-0572. Tickets can also be purchased one hour prior to the show at the Rialto Theatre box office, 14 E. Main St., Canton.
