WSO Band begins summer concert series

The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra’s Billtown Brass Band, led by Director Rick Coulter, is ready to kick off its “Summer Brass” concert series, “offering engaging musical experiences for the community,” the orchestra announced via press release.

“These performances aim to provide lively, audience-friendly entertainment that embodies the essence of summer,” the release said.

The series begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Central Oak Heights pavilion in Milton. The band will also perform at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, on Pine Street downtown as part of the Williamsport Welcomes the World Celebration.

The program features a mix of pieces, including the Latin favorite “Malaguena,” Neil Diamond’s hit “Coming to America,” and the world premiere of “Fantasia on the Marines’ Hymn” by band member Kevin Henry. This composition,

commissioned by the Friends of the Williamsport Symphony, celebrates Billtown Brass’s contribution to the local arts community, the release said. Henry, composer and trombonist, has performed with renowned artists and orchestras across the East Coast.

The repertoire continues with “Smile,” a ballad by Charlie Chaplin, “New York, New York,” John Philip Sousa’s “King Cotton” march, and “Breezin’ Down Broadway,” a medley of show favorites. The concert concludes with the “Armed Forces Salute,” honoring all military branches, and Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Formed in 2000, the Williamsport Symphony’s Billtown Brass Band is a versatile ensemble of 28 musicians following the British brass band tradition, according to the release.

The band’s founder, Music Director Rick Coulter, draws inspiration from his Salvation Army background and studies in trumpet and music education. Coulter’s 40-year career in music education has contributed to the excellence of Williamsport’s fine arts programs.

The concerts are made possible by the generosity of the Billtown Brass’s friends, offering free admission to the public.

“Join the Williamsport Symphony’s Billtown Brass Band to celebrate music, community and the spirit of summer,” the release said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
