Von Trapp family to take the stage at Christ Wesleyan Church

MILTON — Christ Wesleyan Theatre Productions returns for its 31st season with one of the world’s favorite things — Rodgers and Hammerstein’s heartwarming classic, “The Sound of Music,” Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 9-12.

“The Sound of Music is a personal favorite and one that appeals to so many generations of people,” said Pastor Ryan Brosious, theater director. “Although it’s in the back of our minds, the 1965 film is not what we’re trying to imitate. Rather, we are seeking to remain as true to the real-life history as possible.”

Based on the true story of the von Trapp Family Singers, this play captures a personal tale of growth and hope amidst the horrors of World War II.

“The Sound of Music tells the tale of young postulant Maria Rainer, whose free spirit has trouble fitting into the rules and regulations of Nonnberg Abbey. Commissioned by Mother Abbess to serve as the governess for seven motherless children, Maria transforms the von Trapp family home from a place of dour rules and regulations to one filled with joy, laughter, and music,” describes a press release from Christ Wesleyan announcing the production. “In the process, Maria wins the hearts of all seven children — and their widower father, Captain von Trapp. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision to flee the mountains of Switzerland to safety, taking the words of Mother Abbess to heart: ‘Climb every mountain…till you find your dream.’

“This beloved classic brings the same Broadway-quality, live performances you’ve come to love and expect from Christ Wesleyan Theatre Productions,” the press release said.

Performances are slated for 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 through 11, with matinee showings at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 11 and 12, at Christ Wesleyan Church, 363 Stamm Road, Milton.

“What I think audiences can expect is high-quality theatre, superb acting and singing, familiar music, and the beloved tale through a fresh perspective,” Brosious said. “We can’t wait to present this show to the valley!”
