Williamsport Symphony Orchestra presents ‘The King of Instruments: The Organ’

The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Gerardo Edelstein, is thrilled to share its upcoming concert, “The King of Instruments: The Organ,” scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St., Williamsport.

“Audiences can anticipate an enchanting evening filled with the majestic and powerful chords of the organ,” Edelstein said.

Renowned organist Marcos Krieger will join the orchestra as a premier guest, performing G.F. Handel’s organ concerto, “The Cuckoo and the Nightingale,” along with Camille Saint Saens’ Symphony No. 3, “Organ Symphony.” Krieger is a professor of music at Susquehanna University who has performed solo organ and harpsichord recitals all around the world, including in Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Italy and Spain, not to mention nationally.

Also joining the orchestra will be assistant Conductor Rebekah O’Brien, conducting the contemporary piece “Caught by the Wind,” by Jessie Montgomery.

The organ “exquisite and commanding presence” is the theme of the night, the maestro said.

“This concert promises a unique blend of classical masterpieces and contemporary compositions, showcasing the orchestra’s versatility and the extraordinary talents of guest organist Marcos Krieger and assistant Conductor Rebekah O’Brien,” Edelstein said. “The choice of ‘The King of Instruments: The Organ’ theme was inspired by the desire to showcase the extraordinary beauty and power of the organ. This majestic instrument has a rich history and offers a unique musical experience that we wanted to share with our audience.”

The pieces selected for the performance are “iconic representations of the organ’s capabilities,” he said, ranging from playful to grand. Including the contemporary “Caught by the Wind” highlights the organ’s adaptability, bridging classical and modern musical expressions and “offering a well-rounded and engaging concert experience,” he added.

“This concert serves as a testament to the orchestra’s versatility, seamlessly navigating classical and contemporary genres,” the maestro said. “It showcases our musicians’ ability to connect with audiences across various musical landscapes, making the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra a dynamic and engaging ensemble.”

To prepare for such a show, the orchestra has honed its attention to detail, dedicating its time and effort to capturing the essence of the compositions it will perform.

The acoustics and ambiance of the Community Arts Center will enhance the musical experience for performers and audience members alike, Edelstein said.

“I hope the audience leaves with a sense of awe and appreciation for the organ’s grandeur,” he said. “The emotional depth of the pieces combined with the orchestra’s artistry aim to create a memorable and enriching experience for everyone in attendance.”
