SVC announces upcoming season

The Susquehanna Valley Chorale announced in a press release that its 2024-25 concert season will feature bluegrass, holiday traditions, the revival of a beloved piece, and a pops concert.

To kick off the season, the SVC will present, for the second time, “The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass” on Oct. 26-27 at Rusty Rail Brewery in Mifflinburg. “The 35-minute piece is a joyful affirmation of life expressed in sophisticated choral sound and jubilant bluegrass harmonies,” according to the press release. Minnesota-based bluegrass ensemble, Monroe Crossing, will join the SVC for the performance.

Monroe Crossing’s superb musicianship and on-stage rapport have entertained audiences for over 20 years. In 2007, Monroe Crossing was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame and they have twice been selected to showcase at the annual World of Bluegrass convention hosted by the International Bluegrass Music Association. The event will also feature other Appalachian songs.

Holiday traditions abound when the SVC presents “A Candlelight Christmas” on Dec.14-15 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sunbury. This annual SVC tradition will showcase new music selections accompanied by the Commonwealth Brass Ensemble, organ, harp, and percussion. This festive musical offering highlights the true themes of Christmas and offers a peaceful and inspiring start to the holiday season.

The SVC will present “Alzheimer’s Stories” on Mar. 8-9 at Stretansky Hall at Susquehanna University. This piece was commissioned and premiered by SVC 15 years ago and has since been performed worldwide. An added dimension to this event will be the incorporation of a new, engaging video supplement, simultaneously running along with the music during the presentation.

To end the season, the SVC will present “Pops: The Best of 30 Years — Part I” on May 2-3 at Susquehanna University’s Weber Auditorium which will honor and celebrate Bill Payn’s 30 years as SVC conductor and music director by going through the archives and pulling out of some of his — and audience — favorites.
