Classical ballet coming to Weis Center this month
LEWISBURG — According to a press release, Bucknell University’s Weis Center for the Performing Arts will welcome classical ballet ensemble Houston Ballet II at 7:30 p.m. March 28 in the Weis Center Concert Hall, 525 Weis Drive.
There will be a pre-performance Q&A from 6:45-7:15 p.m. in the Weis Center Atrium featuring Kelly Myernick Kubin, teaching artist with Ballet II, and Bucknell University students Sophie Vlak and Sasha Roumyantseva.
Houston Ballet II is the second company of Houston Ballet, America’s fourth largest ballet company. Comprised of a stellar array of young dancers from around the world, Houston Ballet II is under the direction of Artistic Directors Julie Kent and Stanton Welch AM.
When at the Weis Center, they will perform: “Grand Pas de Deux” from “Don Quixote” (Act II), “A Dance in the Garden of Mirth” and “Sleeping Beauty” (Act III).
Houston Ballet II tours both nationally and internationally and have performed in Mexico, China, Hungary, Guatemala, Germany and Switzerland where Houston Ballet II performed at the prestigious Prix de Lausanne dance competition in February 2013.

‘The Sleeping
Beauty,’ Act III
The court is celebrating the wedding of Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund. Characters from other fairy tales have joined the celebration. After Aurora and Florimund’s grand pas de deux, the occasion ends as the entire court joins in the finale.
‘Don Quixote,’
‘Pas de Deux’
A fiesta is held to celebrate the marriage of Kitri, the innkeeper’s daughter, and Basilio, the town barber. The two young lovers celebrate their betrothal by dancing a grand pas de deux.
‘A Dance in the
Garden of Mirth’
Set to music of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, “A Dance in the Garden of Mirth” was designed to capture the vibrancy and joy present in the music and gatherings associated with that time period. It tells the story of a particular type of music and the way that music can affect people.
