Susquehanna Film Festival to host Rock for the Vision Impaired event this month
The non-profit North Central Sight Services, Inc. of Williamsport will soon be getting a helping hand from another non-profit. The Susquehanna Film Festival will host Rock for the Vision Impaired at 4 p.m. May 31 at Pier 87 Bar & Grill, 5647 PA-87.
“Hopefully we can help NCSS a little with their growing overhead expenses, to help raise funds towards their own special events, to help them better fund their services offered to our community and to help them grow even more awareness of their great work,” said Tim Yasui, founder of the SFF and the event’s producer.
“Funding (from the event) will go to our social services department. We have case workers that go to our client’s homes and help with taking them to their appointments,” said Katie Coffey, marketing manager for NCSS.
Located at 2121 Reach Road, NCSS was established in 1957 and currently serves six counties including Lycoming, Clinton, Centre, Tioga, Sullivan and Bradford.
“Our mission is to (help clients) obtain independence or retain independence. We want them to be happy in their homes and not feel held back,” said Coffey.
Their outreach also extends to the workplace, where they provide business services such as document shredding, call center support and much more. In addition, sight impaired employees are hired to provide those business services.
“Working for NCSS gives me a purpose and independence. I love the people I work with and knowing some of them have the same visual impairments and struggles that I have are relatable. I enjoy interacting with our customers and providing the best customer service that I can,” said John Denmark, who is sight impaired and a NCSS customer service representative..
The benefit will rock out with music artists from California to Pennsylvania and will also feature musicians from NCSS.
“I’m most looking forward to watching the different acts perform as well as my opportunity to sing in front of a crowd. Knowing this event is going towards a great cause makes it even better,” said Denmark.
Musicians taking the stage include Naomi Yasui (Tim’s daughter) at 4 p.m., Denmark at 4:45 p.m., Trainwreck Survivors at 5:30 p.m., Bob Randall at 6:15 p.m. and OutRage at 7 p.m. In addition, D.J. Steven Floyd, who is an assistive technical instructor at NCSS, will perform throughout the day.
Tim grew up in Williamsport and still has a home here. Despite now calling Beverly Hills home, the area native continually gives back to his hometown.
“For over ten years now I have been raising money for various charities in the Susquehanna Valley through my other charitable organization — The Billtown Allstars — by producing live concert events and have made so many wonderful connections with local musicians, bands and artists. One of the artists I had successfully booked in the past had suggested NCSS to me and bingo! A lightbulb went off in my head,” said Tim.
During its inaugural year in 2025, the SFF screened over 30 films from around the world in three days. The NCSS benefit is now the first benefit the SFF has produced.
“As a first-time sole proprietor operating as the Susquehanna Film Festival [in 2025], I used my own personal capital, in addition to some generous local sponsors, and quickly found that I needed to grow the organization and team. Hence, our conversion to an official non-profit corporation operating in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This October 9th, 10th and 11th 2026 will be our first festival operating as a non-profit at the District Cinema at Lycoming Valley,” said Tim.
Tim is especially excited to partner once again with Pier 87 Bar & Grill to offer a unique concert experience surrounded by nature.
“I’ve hosted many, many events at my house in Williamsport but we quickly outgrew that limited space and the owners of Pier 87 graciously stepped up to the plate several years ago and began offering me their incredible outdoor stage and facility and we’ve been going back ever since, ” said Tim. “They not only offer me the space to produce these live concert events but they also generously contribute their own donations to the various causes we’ve focused on over the years.”
Rock for the Vision Impaired is free and open to the public. For more information about the event, visit Susquehanna Film Festival on Facebook and for more information about NCSS visit insight.org.
